mainly piano based ballads here...
think Lennon's "god" and "mother" type sound from '71ish...
well, that's what this sounds like, even down to the almost Lennon-esque vocals...
awesome album that doesn't sound forced, that is obviously his sound and vocal style,
I just say Lennon as a comparison I guess...
well worth a listen IMO....

eighth studio set from Mr. Steve Kilby and the boys....
these guys must be one of the underrated bands in the history or popular music....
brilliant musicians and songwriters, superb live band etc etc, but they never really made it
as a chart band(which ultimately means sales and dollars in the pocket)...
music is very mellow as with most of their albums but the songs are all well crafted IMO....
slightly psychedelic in places but a good album nonetheless, and lots of lush strings throughout also!....
I only have four or five of their albums, I really should have more but im too far behind the eightball
now to ever play catch up (much like MH with Elvis Costello and Nick Cave!)

Of course. Still...

There was a time when I would have said that having an attractive and inspiring album cover was a bonus, that I did not really care much if the music was good. these days however, when so many people buy digital downloads (that's if they actually pay for them at all), if an artist wants to sell a few physical copies of an album, surely it's more important than ever to present it in an attractive package?

I think the industry made a big tactical mistake when CDs took over from vinyl in the mid-1980's. Believing that the quality of the sound would sell itself - which it did, for a while - artists and record company executives often paid little or no attention to how the CD was presented and packaged. Remakes of classic vinyl albums were presented with cut-down versions of the album cover; lyric sheets and other inserts were often omitted entirely, or the lyrics sheet might be compressed to the dimensions of the CD case, requiring a microscope to read the printed words.

Lately, many artists seem to have woken up to themselves about this. We have seen the rise of the "de luxe reissue". Even with a standard CD reissue, you notice there is usually much more attention paid to presentation than there would have been inthe early days of CD. There is often a booklet with lyrics or other information, missing from the original CD issue. The more you move away from mainstream pop, the more you are likely to see this. In the field of "new progressive", it is now more or less normal to have lots of inserts, booklets etc. in an attempt to create something that is a visual and tactile product as well as an aural one. From what I read on progressive music fora, those fans may listen first to an album on Spotify or some other online source - but then they will BUY it. Not buy the the right to a digitial download, but order an actual physical copy to be delivered to their door.

None of this is in any way a criticism of the Church album, or the presentation thereof.

Ned Collette + Wirewalker - 2

I should write a review of this, since I doubt very much whether any other members here have this, or have even heard of it. It's a bit premature for that though, because I've only listened to it twice so far.

"Folk-rock" is how Wikipedia classifies this band, and while it does not exactly fit my conception of folk-rock, I'm not sure how else I'd label it, so maybe that's as good a description as any. The "2" refers to the fact that it's the second album by the band under this name (Collette had released solo albums prior), but also to the fact that it's essentially a collaboration between Collette and Joe Talia.

I have come to Ned Collette's work basically in reverse chronological order, having picked up the third album "Networking in Purgatory" last year and finding I liked that enough to investigate the first two albums. First impressions are that they are not as good as Networking, which I suppose is as it should be - an artist should improve with experience - but still an enjoyable listen, and I think this is an album that will reward repeated listenings. It falls midway between folk-rock and experimental - which is probably why I doubt this band will ever have great commercial success. It is probably too "out there" for people who listen to mainstream commercial radio, but not progressive enough for the purists.

listened to the track you posted, I like it, could almost certainly become a grower on me with repeat listens.

I can hear shades of 'folk rock' in this one but not anywhere near enough for the experts to label it as such...
but whatever, each to their own....

and when all else ails genrewise, I find it safest to always slip it into "alternative" that way, you cannot be too far wrong IMO.
