hello, Im DJ Phoenix, a huge music fan(mostly 80s: new wave/goth/synthpop/new romantic/rock/etc). My all time favorite bands(too long of a list, but I'll just mention a few): The Smiths/Journey/KISS/Morrissey/Depeche Mode/etc./etc. Look forward to interacting with all of you on some level, about music. I'm not really much of a current music fan, and dont listen to it. I stick to mostly the stuff I listed. There are some exceptions, but not many. I'm currently in Southern California.

hi DJ and welcome to MD,
i guess it never rains in southern california?
of the bands you mentioned, my opinion is:
the smiths...brilliant to start with, waned in the late 1980s, Morrissey, so-so IMO, Marr...great writer, guitarist to this day
journey....havent really heard enough to form an opinion, but i did buy a cd on a recent trip to the US, but its still sealed and unplayed(too many still in the "to play" pile!
KISS...great singles band in the 70s-early 80s,albumd very patchy overall, got back into them at the end of the decade fir the brilliant "revenge" album, little to like since then, but their "psycho circus" set wasnt too bad...the original KISS were the best incarnation of the band. my take on members of KISS is below :
Paul stanley...great vocalist,performer,very average guitarist
Gene Simmons...avarage bassist, average vocalist, great stage persona, only written a handful of great songs(not good enough for someone who's been at it for nearly 40yrs)
Peter Criss...great drummer, good vocals, written some good songs within band and solo
Ace Frehley...crappy writer/vocalist generally speaking, one of rocks greatest and original guitarists..plays purely by 'feel' IMO
Eric Carr...great drummer.
Bruce Kulick...unlike ace, his playing is 'technically correct'.
Eric Singer....technically profficient drummer, but lacks the 'feel' of Peter and Eric Carr.
other members...several who didnt last long so i wont even mention them!
depeche mode...i really like their first three albums, have numerous singles from the 1980s also, just been getting into "violator" lately thanks to being reccomended it by fellow member Tiggi some time ago

Hey DJ! I am familiar with all those bands, and find it a little weird that the learned Crazy was not aware that Journey grew out of Carlos Santana's band. And Ansley Dunbar played with Zappa. There was a Journey long before Steve Perry, and Journey has been around long enough since to have Neal Schon become tabloid fodder. (You are so lucky to be an Aussie Crazy... you got to miss the "Raised on Radio" years!)
Anyway, are you into Jesus Jones, EMF, FYC, and dare I ask, Rick Astley? It was a very fun era to be in your prime, especially when you consider the underground scenes in LA, NY, London, and other places and the "marginal" acts that never made the air-waves, and British Metal bands and their American cousins who become known as "Hair Bands"... ahhhhh, the eighties.
So, do you like those bands too? Just wonderin'...

Thanks...I want to point out: The only Journey I like is the Steve Perry Journey. The band pre/post Perry, I dont give a crap about
The KISS lineups I like: the original 4, the Bruce Kulick lineup(with Eric Carr)

There was a Journey before Perry, but it wasnt as good, IMO. They almost got dropped from their label, they werent generating enough album sales. I dont care for any incarnation of the band pre/post Perry. Im a huge Perry fan though, so I'm a bit biased. Raised On radio, IMO, was a vg record, and very underrated.
Im originally from Detroit, born and raised. I'm not a huge jesus jones fan, I liked that one song/EMF sang thing. FYC was ok, but I love English beat and Rick Astley is cool.

Detroit eh? Bunches of great acts from Detroit.
Good to hear your loyalty to Steve Perry. Great frontman, and killer pipes. Saw them many times with SP, both with and without Jon Cain, former Baby. I just think they grew a bit predictable after Escape album, and that is when I lost interest in them. Kinda like Priest after "Defenders" or maybe even "Turbo"... they just couldn't hold my attention any longer.
Lots of great Brit acts from your era of choice for sure. BTW, The English Beat are currently in the US for a tour. East Coast next few days, then Cali.
