Recommendations

Hey folks,

I'm sure there are already threads of this nature, but I'm choosing to be self indulgent. I want recommendations in regard to jazz albums (and blues too, if you like). My main interest in regard to jazz is avant-garde/free jazz. Stuff like Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Moondog, Sun Ra, Frank Zappa etc. Anything along those lines (because I only have music by Zorn, recommendations of works by those artists are appreciated to0) would be good. I also am interested in bebop, 'cause of a documentary about Thelonius Monk. Exotica is even cool (which is Latin/jazz fusion?). Speaking of jazz fusion, I like that too. Basically anything that isn't Kenny G.-like in nature is welcome. I'm open!

I'd say Beach is the head Jazz (& Blues) honcho. Hopefully he'll be along soon to take you under his Aussie wing and recommend all manner of stuff.

Free Jazz: Cecil Taylor, late John Coltrane, Anthony Braxton
Bebop: Miles Davis, John Coltrane

I haven't listened to Zorn yet but I did listen to some artists of his label Tzadik records e.g. Jamie Saft Trio's Astaroth: Book of Angels Vol. 1. It's jewish folklore mixed with Jazz (Zorn calls it "radical jewish culture").

For Fusion I'd recommend Mahavishnu Orchestra (tends to prog rock) or Herbie Hancock (more jazzy).

Thanks. Anything by Zorn is good. I actually have some stuff by Mahavishnu Orchestra. It's genius. I have casually heard some Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton... I also like Braxton's son's band, Battles. I'll dig further into them.

Hmm, never heard of him but I'll have a closer look on that one. Anthony Braxton also collaborated with Wolf Eyes; if you're looking for some noise you could give that a try, too.

Yeah, Tyondai Braxton formed Battles with the drummer of Helmet/Tomahawk and the guitarist of Don Caballero. It's basically a math rock band that has a lot of vintage electronics thrown in. Good stuff.

I think I've heard of Wolf Eyes before... I'll look into it.
