What do you recoomend as a good IPOD system ?

I am seriously thinking about upgrading my music box to hold a capacity of 500 albums. Is it possible to buy one that holds 1,0000 ?

As you can see I'm a novice on Ipods but because of my ever increasing collection I want to store them on a playback machine.

Any recommendations as to storage capacity, etc. ????

I've just had a quick look. Apple make a 160GB model which will hold 40000 songs. At say 10 songs per album, that'd be 4000 albums !!

That capacity is only possible using 128kbps encoding, which will be the worst sounding. Presumably a higher bit-rate than 128kbps will deliver better sound, but will reduce the capacity accordingly. 128 kbps may be fine to your ears, in which case one of those i-Pods would be overkill.

BTW the big capacity models use internal hard drives for storage, and I've no idea how robust they are.

To give some idea of the trade-off between bit-rate & capacity, I use an 8GB Nano, which will hold 25 albums using the Apple Lossless codec. This should give pretty good sonic performance. Scaling that up suggests that a 160GB unit would hold 500 albums in Lossless mode.

In summary, 1000 albums is perfectly feasible, but I'd suggest a bit of research into which models offer what capacity, and sort out what bit-rate you want to use.

When it comes to the larger 'video' makes of Ipod I've had the 30GB model for 5 years and although it doesn't hold all my stuff (music, films etc) it is extremely robust and has survived many drops including falling off a motorbike at 30mph A friend of mine has one of the larger capacity models for a while and has no complaints....
