DANIEL LANOIS ~ Player, Piano

Listened to this yesterday and was amused to find that the final track is titled “Sunday Aslyum”. I’m reading that as refuge rather than lunatic! Second time I listened to it – wasn’t quite sure the first time around. It’s kinda experimental without being jarring or shocking. All instrumental but don’t let the name fool you – while it’s largely piano driven, there are synths aplenty. And I actually think I like it because I’m unsure of it, if that makes any sense! Found it sonically interesting – some crazy timings and a sort of wash of sound echo in the production – as though the piano was a jangly upright in an empty room, maybe a sustain in a layer or two - you can hear the pedals hitting the buffer and the odd creak along with breathy sounds, a la Keith Jarrett. Sorry if I’m waffling – not entirely sure how to describe what he’s done.
Doesn’t necessarily tug at my heart all the way through but is a grower, I’d say. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon, and there’s a completeness about this album. It’s going in this thread because it seems to fit better here than anywhere else.
