DAWES ~ Good Luck with Whatever

Surprised myself again. This is a good listen IMHO - indie/alt/pop/rock. The opener is an ode to the eternal child in us all – a humorous, slightly jaded look. I was surprised to find that they're in their mid-thirties, in reality. To position them somewhere in the vast musical landscape as a ‘sounds like’, think a slightly rockier/alt Billy Joel or Jackson Browne. Can’t believe I just put those two side by side, but maybe someone will get what I mean! Lol!

The album sounds fairly loose but I’m not in any doubt whatsoever that these guys know exactly what they’re doing. Great energy and a nice vibe right the way through – a mix of rock/folk and fuzzy guitars – a couple of ballads – some really heartfelt stuff – a good balance. My impression of this band is that there’s no one-upmanship happening – keys occasionally seem to come to the forefront but otherwise, again - a good balance.

I think “Good Luck With Whatever” is about being sick to death of the world that is right now – rhetoric, politics, conspiracies, etc. – that’s the way I see it anyway – an appeal to live and let live. Life goes on regardless of all the blah blah blah we all get hung up on and which really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

My favourite is “Didn’t Fix Me” which seems to be about how a person can try to fill up their life doing all the ‘right’ things and somehow still not feel ok, and that that’s ok. The whole album is pretty philosophical actually – very honest and human if a tad melancholy – clever but not too clever, no b/s and plenty of subject matter with which to identify.

The title track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL2OudkC3W0

"St Augustine at Night" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeke3k0n9rw - a paean to a home town and the way life seems to slip past before you know it.

The closer, "Me Especially" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmmEEIUrDGo

and "Didn't Fix Me" ...

Love the piano on this - just flows along. Like the sound of this - Sunday afternoon album. Good balance of sounds. A buy for me for sure.

introduced to me by Major Tim, though probably by now Colonel Tim?? (either way, Major Tim rolls off the tongue easier LOL)...

can hear the Jackson Browne that Ruby mentioned...

not a bad album by any means and MH, like Ruby said.....
