Spotify listen:
twenty-first studio album.
was never a big fan, theyd past their prime before i heard of them and in any case i was into
other music, not aging metal-dudes.
more 'classic rock' than metal/hard rock.
songs quite melodic and surprisingly good but hos it stacks up against their back catalogue i cannot say.
favourite:

I listened to this today CH and I have to say their earlier stuff was more creative. It's not bad for an ageing band and Gillan's vocals are pretty good but they've had their day and it's not really breaking any new ground. But the songs are quite good with that familiar DP riff/vibe going on. And that is my problem with it. They are just songs. Gone are the days when they experimented with unusual forms and extended instrumentals. I suppose I have just moved on from that. I like it but it isn't something I would go out and buy. Too formulaic.

yes!
you nailed it..."going through the motions" basically, good album but not earth shattering.
what recommendations would you have as a starting place to enter "the world of Deep Purple" ????

Live rock at it's very best with a bit of blues in the middle. Blackmore's finest achievement was with Rainbow not Deep Purple. Just my opinion.

I purchased the original Made In Japan double album in the early seventies upon its' release. Fabulous live album which even to this day is listed as one of the best live rock records in history ( The Who's Live at Leeds shows up on this list regularly also). I never considered Deep Purple a metal band at all ! Hard rock...yes.
