Pixies played the first gig of their four-night 'Doolittle' residency at London's O2 Academy Brixton last night (October 6).

Frank Black and co had previously announced that they were to perform their 1989 album 'Doolittle' in full at the gig, but surprised fans by playing a host of B-sides before kicking into the album.

"We've played some of these songs, like, five times ever," bassist Kim Deal told fans during the first stage of the gig, which saw Pixies run through B-sides including 'Weird At My School' and 'Bailey’s Walk'. In total, the band played all five of the B-sides penned during their 'Doolittle' campaign, with 'Into The White' featuring in the encore.

After a celebratory rendition of 'Manta Ray', Deal played the famous introductory bassline of Doolittle's opening track 'Debaser', garnering wild cheers from the packed audience and inspiring several of the audience to crowdsurf.

They then played 'Doolittle''s 15 tracks in order, barely stopping between each song. The group were backed by several video screens featuring images of the band, along with a series of vignettes. 'Here Comes Your Man''s black and white video featured shots of all four band members goofing around while the song was played.

After a spirited version of the album's final track 'Gouge Away', Pixies left the stage for a short while before returning for a five-song encore that saw them play classics including 'Gigantic', 'U-Mass' and 'Bone Machine'.
