The paradigm, the master is
Doc Severinsen, the leader of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson band for 25 years (1967-92) and a player on that show for 15 previous years. A 50+ year recording history as a leader, and sideman many, many times. Class all the way.

The 21st Century examplar and the near-exact-opposite is the
?uestlove Band--the Roots Band-- on the
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show. Any music guests on Mr. Fallon's show were either their own complete bands or sat in with the band w/o fronting it. Nice to see big guys just sitting in...they seemed to enjoy the lack of pressure too...

The late night house-band who really impressed me is Fallon's, The Roots....
They're a well oiled machine IMO...
Their music seems to flow effortlessly whatever genre they play....
I mean, they must be good because Elvis Costello used them to back him on his last album and is very particular about who he plays with.....

True dat. I mean, he's never backed his wife...Little joke and just sniping--she's Diana Krall and they have very different kinds of musical expressions.
