The Pattison-Schenker Summit recorded two albums of covers, but my favourite is their version of Ten Years After's I'd Love to Change the World. The original is good anyway, but Pattison and Schenker at least match TYA.

Jorn Lande also recorded an album of covers, Starfire, but his version of Journey's Edge of the Blade is amazing.

I am not a reggae fan, but Chris Thompson's version of Bob Marley's Redemption Song, for Manfred Mann's Earth Band Live in Budapest, is one of the most impassioned vocal performances I have ever heard.

Bryan Ferry's version of Jealous Guy is better than John Lennon's in my opinion. Nektar's Norwegian Wood is not better than the Beatles, but it is a strong cover.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band recorded a lot of great covers: Playing With Fire, Mighty Quinn, Demolition Man, Visionary Mountains, For You, Blinded by the Light (album version) and lots of others.

Santana took some effective songs and made them even better - She's Not There and Well, Alright.

Gamma's version of Mickey Newbury's I Wish I Was is fantastic (Pattison again with Ronnie Montrose). They also heroically covered Clint Ballard's Im Alive, made famous by The Hollies, and Something in the Air by the distinctive Thunderclap Newman.

Rod Stewart and the Faces performed I Know I'm Losing You several times and almost made it their own.

Sassafras's version of Ohio turns CSN&Y's, or more specifically Neil Young's, song into a hard rock classic.

Others include: War by Frankie Goes to Hollywood (produced by Trevor Horn), Rod's Downtown Train, Status Quo's Roadhouse Blues. I'll probably think of others after logging out.
