Either a group on their away up that outgrew their hometown or too quirky for a smaller area or they just flat like being on the road alot.. Nearly every big-time musician has been one, one time or another, and have great stories to tell (what they can remember, anyway). At the mid-tier, you don't survive unless you are mostly sober and pretty focused (not big enough to have somebody clean up the mess). They either play the biggest roadhouse in your area or flesh out the bill for a Bigger Name's concert thingie. Anyway here's 4 different bands that qualify; I'll leave the verbiage to the Skipper's Smokehouse link--quite incisive on the bands.
Town Mountain Imagine a band that holds the attention of both traditional bluegrass fans AND jam band fans. Quite a trick but each guy in this quintet brings so much to the table, it groans with goodness. 4 CDs/1 live; please read on the 1st one: http://www.allmusic.com/album/steady-ope...0002125248 Their Site: http://www.townmountain.net/ << Their stuff at the Usual Suspect is pricey--either buy from them directly or stay with YT stuff.
Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNZHKuZ2OuU << This will snap you in, quickly: Making covers their own.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2242K2oz750 << a trucker's lament, taken a different way << great soloing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sE_hztVjer4 << From that same session. << Giving a woman a good reason or two to stay the night...
BONUS: 40 minutes at a fest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAntWDQDv1M
Applebutter Express Unusual instrumental line-up but it sure works. 1 album (digital-only) but a bright future awaits them. Their site: http://applebutterexpress.com/ << The videos of fest appearances are OK but do not miss those 6 Podcast episodes--1-2 hours of them and specially-selected guests. Whee, Daddy!
Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzZ_vpBZeAY <<"Wannee" is Suwannee, the river and the fest--where all the hippies and their spiritual progeny wound up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQWp2VphTJI << Not a trace of irony here--this couple believes...and brings it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmHZB99vKXg << Thisn's just a natural hoot...but again no mockery of the source material--just taking it their way.

Next up is Between Bluffs, a rootsy, folksy, country band. Their Site (they encourage recording their shows and sending it to them--remind you of another Grateful band?) Here's the site: http://www.betweenbluffs.com/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUBC6I_qleE << Takes big cojones to cover Hendrix...

A 10-piece theatrical soul band that mixes in some hip originals? SOLD! The Savants of Soul, from North Florida: http://www.savantsofsoul.com/ Nothing on the Wiki/AMG front--but from the vids, they always bring the party.
Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD-DszAk4dU <<OK sound, crap vid--puts you in the picture tho'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7uWJ-1GkH8 << An original...and I like every part of it...unreservedly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCw-yNah8Y << When a band member believes enough to get a vid made and posted...how can I say "No!"?
Totally irrelevant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEDt9QcpjZQ << YouTube's algorithms are sometimes strange--this came up when looking for The Savants...and they have a song with the same title--this is the other one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwYcnRXSP7M
Wonder how many substance-fueled late nights it took to conjure this band's name? The Pimps of Joytime A post-genre band, they and their leader, Brian Jay, are prominent enough to have a Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pimps_of_Joytime Their Site: http://pimpsofjoytime.com/
Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0d_8Rwr-qY << What the hell is this? It's janxsta funk, is what--come along for the ride.

Some Blues folks: Coming by the band name honestly (the Mahoff, G. Shadowhawk Ellis, is a member of the Great Cherokee Nation) is Broken Arrow Blues Band. Based near Detroit but playing everywhere. They play a gritty, almost throw-back type of Blues that's hard to characterize. Their Site: http://www.brokenarrowbluesband.com/bios...rsonal.php << opens with music ReverbNation's take: http://www.reverbnation.com/babb
Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-JTgPTTcsI << Lotta bands have ridden this riff to riches...few do it better
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lh0S40jWoU << Reminds me of somebody I like a big lot--Omar and the Howlers g. freakin' v.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TN2pSkfBUA << Not inventing anything--taking the polish of what other's have done
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4MVd6yBaVw << Stone-cold pros, every one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKJDffzbe_w << If there is such a thing-- sledgehammer with subtlety
Florida-based outfit that puts the Blues harp right up front. They don't give a show--they perform a show. Swingin' Harpoon Here's the Website: http://www.swinginharpoonbluesband.com/ << Totally freaked me--they talk about all guitar BUT Blues guitar. Their agency is more informative: http://saltwatercowboylivemusicproductio...N.COM.html Their live CD looks to be a real ripper.
Tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REKDD-PLE80 << Real fine job on one of my fave Jimmy Reed tunes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hNARSfeAwU << rave-up urging of environmental responsibility...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfcjnqrMgho << Mr. Lanigan gives plenty of open space and freedom to his players, stepping back in for his time. Admirable.

This one is more accurately a "Club Warrior"--his 20 years with the Chicago PD prevented much road action but plenty of club time. Johnny Drummer. His name is his claim to fame but doubles a bunch of other instruments too. A respected critic, Cub Koda, likes him a lot. Just a few albums but a top-notch label: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/johnny-dr...iscography The 1 to get (but not for Blues purists): http://www.allmusic.com/album/unleaded-b...0000003831 His Site (catch'm soon--he's 77): http://johnnydrummermusic.com/
Some tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxDBeggORC0 << Rock yo' baby on a Saturday might--oh yes.
