I’ve tried to figure out what funtion of the PORTAL section of the forum is and why some things appear there and some don’t . I give up. Can anyone tell me what the hell it means?

I understand even less about these things than you do. I am hopeless with all the different functions which is why I don't use them.

I’ve encountered some peculiar forum software but the code that underlies this one is one of the most peculiar.
I think your approach is probably the best, don’t use most of it. However at times when attempting to do something very simple like edit a post the original remains intact no matter how hard I try to correct spelling or add something.
Am I correct in guessing this place doesn’t have anyone functioning formally as monitor/moderator?

^The 'Portal' acts as a newsfeed and would probably be better titled as such. 

On the left are the most recently commented on threads, in descending chronological order, while the main body comprises brand new threads in the same order. It’s the best page to view if you want a concise look at the most recent activity on the forum.

Thanks, but why then have a another link called ‘View new posts’?

^The Portal can be viewed whilst not logged in, if you choose not to be, whereas 'view new posts' is only an option when logged in.
