ELP versus THE NICE
#1
The question i often ask myself when listening to anything by Keith Emerson. is which band do I like better ..ELP or THE NICE..
both of these bands were absolutely outstanding in terms of musicianship.

ELP were the more successfull band and have made many fine albums, but when I compare them to the NICE I think that the NICE had a warmth + humanity and sence of humour to them. ELP were a lot more hi tec in their productions sand a lot more polished in their sound.
but saying that I think the NICE played from the heart and Lee Jacksons vocals were superb..

never been a fan of either band...just think their music sounds dated, especially ELP
"BTO....Bachman,Turner,Overweight
They were big in the 70s....for five minutes,on a Saturday,after lunch..."  -  Me 2014.

I'm not sure what you mean by "dated" ? You mean old fashioned ????...most of us Regulars at MD are always mentioning the older groups ????...lol

I don't mind whether we are called 'dated' or 'old fashioned' or whatever. Show me one band in the world today that can produce a double album where one side is an original classical piano concerto, the secnd side is a collection of folk songs with incredible lyrics (Lend Your Love To Me Tonight) - a third side that has jazz/rock fusion along with classical percussive movements and a fourth side that combines all those elements, along with electronica, in two pieces that are nothing short of spectacular. There's a reason ELP's Works Volume 1 was the voted best album of 1977. The production and recording on this album has yet to be surpassed. Not to mention the musicianship. There is not a contemporary band around today that is anywhere close to this level.

I hear a lot of the same "rifs" in ELP that the Nice used, like em both, but overall I like ELP better. Probably because of the production and sound quality, in terms of musicianship and song writing I find it a toss up.

Well stated, Jerome !!! I agree totality in your ELP post ! Amazing band...also Carl Palmer is an incredible percussionist in my view ! I just commented on CH's "dated" sound refering to ELP...I didn't agree it was a dated sound ! I get lost when I listen to Works...mesmerising music !!!

If you like a more contemporary sound try their 'Black Moon' - album. Some great tracks.
