No idea what this band name means, but this Austin, TX jumbo gumbo combo mixes soul. funk and New Orleans R&B in a nifty way. Killer horn line that hires out separately. Currently touring the South and Florida, supporting a new album (They have only a few in the near 20 years they've been together): http://www.allmusic.com/artist/mingo-fis...0000400589
One listen and you'll be hooked:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcwCFvYk7lk << their fans have put up a ton of tunes...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lznDPU5WWk << ... I'm barely scratching the surface--here doing a classic N.O tune
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pw6TAR9oNk << perf on the band bus--don't see that every day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cHrO2DXoR4 << James Brown medley--so nice!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlDfc5QRZy0 << Totally rockin' the boat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwdZKthqhF8 << not the classic tunes but it rocks, in a hip-hop way
Dern shame I couldn't find a full concert vid to see how they structure a show. Oh well. They do have a DVD on the Usual Suspect but it commands a premium price. That said, read that pro's review--it says it all: http://www.amazon.com/Live-Granada-Theat...ref=sr_1_1

Their site with a vid of the title tune of their new offering: http://www.mingofishtrap.com/

they've been on my radar for a while, but haven't purchased anything yet. They have 2 or 3 releases - any recommendations for where to start?

The key question, isn't it? And one I'm not equipped to answer (my knowledge of them is only the research done for the post). So logically, their newest, On Time, is the one to get. Here's why: none of theirs is pro rated/reviewed on AMG and the reader ratings are only one apiece, prolly done by a rabid fan. Also a check of the Usual Suspect shows only one of their previous offerings and that at a high price. Additionally, the newest showcases their current lineup of tunes and personnel (the band is not known for turnover and the horn charts can be done by anybody equally skilled but why not go with the here-and-now?). And if that gets you sufficiently pumped, contact the band or fan club directly for the previous stuff. Couldn't find a fan club listing but here's the FB page: https://www.facebook.com/mingofishtrap
Real glad you in particular enjoyed this and happy hunting. Remember they have a ton of stuff on YT--purchasing is a nicety but not a necessity--they get nothing from secondary purchases anyway.
