Bluegrass

Bill Monroe was the role model, but that's straight-time playing, very different from even the 60s when Doc and others became popular.
Before that, for decades, there were regional fiddle/banjo/guitar/stringband competitions all over the place, and hundreds of great players of 'bluegrass' which it's best not to get into a discussion of the origins of yet again, is it?
OK. What we heard way back was, it was certain group of tunes, brought to America from a certain part of Europe that etc.etc.
That was it though, it really only concerned a small circle of musicians, pre-Bill Monroe - bluegrass hasn't really ever separated itself from country music since, which is a good thing.
Some may have trouble with Trad bluegrass ifn' ya'll aint hern it before.

I find it sort of amusing that this "whitest" of American musics has as one of it's major instruments something derived closely from a West African (slave) instrument--banjo. Funny how things work out. Cauc soul, indeed.
