Bio - from allmusic
Brighton, England's Bat for Lashes is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Natasha Khan. The Pakistan-born Khan pulls
from her art school education and her experience producing multimedia installations when it comes to writing songs.
She also cites Steve Reich and Susan Hiller as influences, while echoes of Björk and Siouxsie Sioux are heard
throughout Bat for Lashes' mystical indie rock sound. Bat for Lashes' first single, "The Wizard," was digitally
released by DiS, and issued as a 7" on Khan's own She Bear imprint in early 2006. That fall, with "Trophy" burning
up the BBC indie rock chart, the Fur & Gold LP arrived in the U.K. in September. The album was released a year later
in the U.S. to much critical acclaim. Bat for Lashes' ambitious 2009 album, Two Suns, revolved around the concept of
Khan and her blonde, hedonistic alter ego Pearl, and featured a duet with Scott Walker. Khan's third album, 2012's
The Haunted Man, raised eyebrows with its cover image depicting her in the nude, but songs such as the single
"Laura" were more subtle and subdued than Bat for Lashes' previous efforts.
Album Review - from allmusic
Natasha Khan's two previous Bat for Lashes albums -- 2006's Fur and Gold and 2009's Two Suns -- were lavish affairs
from their cover images to their intricate songs. The Haunted Man, however, is simpler, more assertive, and even
aggressive; the picture of Khan, naked except for the also nude man slung over her shoulders, on the album's front
is no mistake. Born from a nearly paralyzing case of writer's block, these songs, such as the singles "Laura" and
"All Your Gold," are more direct than anything Khan has done before, while retaining the air of mystique that has
made her one to watch and listen to since the beginning.
