Live Albums
#1
Some love 'em, some hate 'em, and I probably fall into the former category.

I was just curious to see what sort of percentage of my catalog of albums are live recordings, so did a quick rough count.

The answer is only about 7%...

Any ideas about how many of yours are live ??

... or whether live material is a good or bad thing ??

mine would be somewhere around 2% as a guess, as i dont really buy "live" albums unless it is by an artist i love.
mostly, over the years i have got my live material on VHS,then DVD, and now bluray.

to answer the second part of your question Tiggi, i do like hearing how a song sounds different live as opposed to studio recordings, however, nothing beats actually going to a concert for the atmosphere and total experience

Absolutely love live albums - a list too long to mention but the funny thing is (and I am not really a fan of his) one of the best I have ever heard is Neil Diamond's 'Hot August Night'. Certainly the best musical intro to a concert I have ever heard. Some faves areGenesis - Seconds OutKansas - Two for the ShowNeil Diamond - Hot August NightJames Taylor - Live (the double CD)Jethro Tull - Bursting OutPaul Simon - Concert in the ParkS & G - The Concert in Central ParkRoxy Music -The High RoadDavid Bowie - StageBob Dylan - Live at Budokan Jean Michel Jarre - The Concerts in China (listen to 'Fishing Junks at Sunset')Pink Floyd - PulseYes - YesshowsRainbow - On StageDeep Purple - both Made in Japan and Made in Europe and the list goes on and on and on......I think because of the whole boycott thing of SA due to apartheid (there's that wonderful term again) we were not able to see many big name live acts. The only way we could experience a concert was on vinyl - funny how the moral majority still found a way to sell their product into the very same system they were publicly denouncing. Money talks. Isn't democracy wonderful.

I usually don't buy the live album unless I've seen the band live already, in person or on TV or something. I love the Ramones Loco Live, it's probably my favorite Ramones album now that I think about it. It takes me back to the show. I feel the energy they put out and it's great.

Mentioned this in another thread but forgot to add it here - Supertramp - Paris. Really get the sensation of 'being there'. Love it to bits.

I got butt-loads of Dead shows in the collection, along with all the biggies from other bands, like Priest's "Unleashed in the Studio, errr, East", Frampton (of course), All the Genesis live stuff from "Genesis", and "Second's out" to "Three Sides Live", to Bad Religions "30 Years", The Drop Kick Murphys, Dylan and The Band, Gov't Mule, Pat Travers Band, Chicago, Deep Purple in Japan and Europe, Cheap Trick, and bunches other. Not sure of percentage of live stuff, but there have been some great ones over the years.
