An elegant and charming release from Ms Gardot. She's up there with the notable chanteuses IMHO. And she came to music accidentally - quite literally. Was driven into by some idiot while riding her bicycle and had to spend a year in hospital learning basic motor skills again at which time it was suggested that she try her hand at guitar playing and songwriting. She always wears sunglasses - not as a pretension - this is a hangover from that event which has left her with an extreme sensitivity to light.
This is a classic, measured and classy selection of songs. Very gentle and a tad old fashioned. Nowhere for her to hide in terms of her voice and that would be unnecessary in any case. She has a lovely smoky, sultry vocal tone which I would imagine is capable of penetrating the stoniest of hearts. She is fluent in French and some of these pieces are sung in that language, although I think perhaps that the title track is Portuguese? Although sayonara is Japanese so it's all a bit of mixed bag! Anyway - it means Goodbye My Love, as one might intimate.
At 32 minutes in length, this is not a very long affair. Enjoyable listen for me and the title track has become an earworm. I don't recall hearing her with such orchestration before, but then again, I have also not listened to all her releases.
"Get Out Of Town" - an acoustic piece ...
... and this is a live one - "So Long" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIeK1o_4LFk
