I have played in a Brass Band since the age of 12 (many years ago now), I now play, conduct and teach learners.
I think all children should learn an instrument for the simple fact that it is good for the mind.

All of which reminds me of Anderson-Bruford-Wakeman-Howe's amazing prog album with the track 'Birthright' which deals with NZ' history.
