muso's pays?
#1
not sure who can answer this one for me but im thinking Gryphon or Jerome may have a fair idea....its about musicians and their income

1.if they sign a contract for say $X for 3 albums, how is it paid?

2.is the above $X an allowance to record each album in the contract?

3.do they generally gat paid monthly, quarterly, annually?

4. is a contract for a tour organised by promoters and record company and/or are the artists included in the contract process?

5. do they generally get $X per gig or share of ticket price?

6.how are airplay royalties determined? do the radio stations have to keep a record of every track they play? and where do these royalties come from?

I can do some parts of this because I have some experience of parts; I don't know all and it varies

1 It depends on sales and orders from retailers not from the general public..................what you sell depends on how these people order............paid is another matter and depends on who is dealing with who..................in the early days not many people knew the ropes and money often went to those who knew where to look...............Sometimes the artists was the last to get anything due to crafty managers , middle men small print and inability to deal with overseas markets................There are times when money was not how you were paid.........ABBA have taken fruit as a payment for some matters in some less organized countries.

2 I don't know much..............depends on the contract and he skill of he negotiator and where you are in your carrier.

3 I know from some artists it varies ..............Classic case I can sight is Joe Meek and Telstar............Due to a challenge on who wrote it Joe's money was held up for years around 5 or so.........eventually it did come; three weeks after he killed himself and at that point he had not got the price of a cup of tea.

I used to know Clifford T Ward ( Wonderful guy and I did quite a bit to try and ease some of his problems ! Very sad what happened to him!) Clifford was basically stitched up by a clever man who took most of his song writing royalties through clever footwork and hid them away from him in a way that never allowed him to make any cash whilst he was alive ;as a result he was owed a fortune but live on bank overdrafts etcs which eventually he could not pay.

4/5 I have done some of these for a friend who is just about to tour ............again they vary..............he can play for a) A set fee. B) A set fee and a percentage of the door..........C He can just take a percentage of the door...............or D they can come to him and make an offer..............

there are lots of other tricks including ...........things other than payment of money.................Stig Anderson took several 18 wheelers of cargo out of a communist country after an ABBA concert................Brian Epstein took various business concessions

6 Mostly the answer is Yes.............BMI or whatever ts called now-a-days and STEMRA for Europe determine the airplay figures and you pay a royalty to be able to lay them.............So a radio stations have to somehow determine what they play and by who........There are tricks.............

Grief don't I know some real trivia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.
