I'm New!

Hi everybody, my name is Lyndsay and I listen to a variety of music including country music (under the influence of my mum lol). Listening to country music has also got me interested in Folk and World music but I don't know where to start, can anyone recommend anything for a beginner?

obvious: Bob Dylan (New Morning, Blood on the Tracks), Neil Young (Harvest, After the Gold Rush), Nick Drake (Pink Moon, Five Leaves Left)
not THAT obvious: John Martyn (Solid Air), Elliot Smith (Roman Candle), Fleet Foxes (Fleet Foxes), Joanna Newsom (Have One On Me)
more 'world oriented' folk (I know this sounds dumb but whatever, these are my recommendations so I do what I want): Devendra Banhart (Cripple Cow)

What got me hooked on world music was Dead Can Dance. They're not exactly world music, more like ethnic ethereal or whatever crappy name you choose to call it. I don't care.
What's cool is Rodrigo y Gabriela (latin acoustic guitar), Babatunde Olatunji (african drumming stuff), Etran Finatawa (some call it desert blues. whatever...), Renaud Garcia-Fons (arabian), Madlib's Madlib Medicine Show No. 2 Flight to Brazil.
If you like it more freaked out I recommend Master Musicians of Bukakke's Totem One and Totem Two. And you've got to check out Moondog's album Moondog (the one from 1956). Or you could just go to your local pedestrian area and listen to some ludicrous peruvian flutebands.

As regards good folk music I have a few suggestions:

Mostly they ae UK based .

The centrer point of the UK folk scene for many years has been Fairport Convention ( Albums to try
Fairport Convention, What We Did On Our Holidays, Unhalfbricking, Liege and Leaf ) Fairport are still around today after nearly 40 years and have many other excellent albums and spin off groups.

To my mind an excellent overlook UK Folk band are Magna Carta ( There is an guide in the Beginners Guide section...........Albums to try : Seasons, Lord Of The Ages, Wasties Orchard, Martin's Cafe

Lindisfarne are one of North England's finest..........Albums to try , Fog On The Tyne, Nicely Out Of Tune
Dingly Dell,

Jethro Tull....................Heavy Horses.............and many more

Steeleye Span contain one of he finest female folk vocalist Maddy Prior and has real feel of Middle ages folk .

Pentangle blend Folk music with Jazz and have three excellent members Bert Jansch, Jacqui McShee.and Danny Thompson............The work of this band is a true legend.............Try Basket of Light

or Cruel Sister

Turning to the Emerald Isle ............Look into Mary Black and her lesser known Sister Frances...........

Mary is one of he most respected people in her Generation and has produces excellent albums such as
The Holy ground.

One last area,..............Europe has a strong Celtic folk movement at the moment and one of its best are Rapaltje ....................

- Eliza Carthy. Gifted vocalist & Fiddle player. Martin Carthy's daughter. No duff alums IMV.
- Jim Moray. Gifted vocalist & multi-instrumentalist. No duff albums IMV.
- Seth Lakeman. Another vocalist & Fiddle player. Only have one of his.

World Music:

- Youssou N'Dour. Spine tingling Senegalese vocalist. Try The Guide: Wommat
- Ali Farka Toure. Malian Guitarist & vocalist. Plays "Desert Blues", which is Bluesy, but distinctly African. Try Savane
- Tinariwen. Collective with fluid membership, most of whom are genuine Tuareg nomads. Try Aman Iman: Water is Life, or Imidiwan: Companions
