I'm not much of a film buff but I suppose I like Woody Allen, David Lynch (Twin Peaks was some of the best TV ever) but I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Frank Capra - Arsenic and Old Lace, It's a Wonderful Life?, Claude Berri and John Ford
I like the old Ealing comedies also, the Monty Python stuff and I must admit Kevin Smith (well mostly off the back of Clerks) and the Marx Brothers.
I don't like films with a lot of cruelty and violence which seems to rule out a lot of the 'serious' films - just about made it through Schindlers List for instance - Tarantino films make me feel ill - I'm a wimp I guess. I can see the artistic merit but I just don't enjoy them.
I also think that films are intrinsically unsatisfying as you'll never get as deep inside them as you do a book and they're never as singularly satisfying as a painting or sculpture. Enjoyable but ultimately I'm not that interested.
