Is it strange I immediately thought of a grouple of people standing outside the front doors with headphones in at lunchtime?
Might I suggest one headphone up the sleeve of your shirt if the need for a music fix becomes too much? it's the small victories sometimes!

- either that or some large scale Ghandian civil disobedience - mobilise!

i would try the up the sleve thing, but my headphones are too big, and my music loud.

let them have these petty victories, i shall bide my time.

this will also give me time to think about what to do.

ever thinking of nothing, Syn

Health and safety is an important issue which is done a grave disservice by the overzelous interpretation of statutory legislation and the fear of litigation.

I was a health and safety rep. As far as I can recall, there was no specific regulation which prevented an employee from listening to headphones whilst on his or her lunch break.

Assuming that's still the case - and you're not driving a fork-lift truck, operating a works' radio system etc etc, which would obviously pose a risk - then your employer would have to show just cause for instigating this ban should you choose to ignore it and are called to task.

I'd write to your personnel department asking them to put it in writing and citing their reasons. Then I'd speak to the Health and Safety Executive. Your employer may have shot itself in the foot and it feels really good to chalk up a victory against a boss.
