It's an archaic way but I'm used to it and it always works for me. I always use the last name of a solo artist and omit the word "The" and use the first letter of the band like most music shops do.
I used to have a reference catalogue but that went by the wayside.
I use the same system SteveO, almost identical in fact . Though my reference lists have their own status - my CD catalogue is up to date, vinyl needs some work and cassette list has been abandoned. I just use the spreadsheet (excel) program to keep track of performers, titles and country of pressing.
My collection is large and this is most certainly a challenge on space and has meant when a culling happens many titles find new homes - an easy update function would be welcome but not likely for me as I am not likely to sit in my basement and scan barcodes on the few that have those or take pictures of all the album covers. That thought just terrifies me - I'm not sure I would/could leave my basement.

Why to take pictures of album covers manually when there are special music collection organizers discussed in this thread? =)

Many of my albums are not on those databases as they are old and have not been reissued. A friend who has embraced some of these programs tried to see how many of my records were already in the database. He ended up photographing a bunch and manually loading them into the database - I am not likely to continue with his project as we just grabbed from my recently listened to pile and did not dig very deep into the collection. It is a great idea but not the way I want to spend my summer, hahahaha. (It would be very labour intensive)

Yes, photographing your albums may be not the best idea, but being aware of where your CD currently is or who has borrowed it can be quite useful, in my view. The loan manager feature of Musicnizer is one of those which determined my choice.

The Zune software from Microsoft works well for easy catagorizing by artist, genre, release date etc...
However, you can't really look up actual liner notes and stuff like that. We have like 7,000 albums on our PC, and use Zune to keep it all sorted out. And it is easy to play tunes from, build playlists, and all.

Can you just get studio tracks like a CD or is it all mostly live videos ?? Also can you get every track from one studio album or play the entire studio album without videos ? As you can see I don't know a lot about You Tube only that most of the songs are live on video.
