Outside his primary roles as André 3000's partner in OutKast and as one of the central members of the Dungeon Family, Big Boi (born Antwan André Patton) appeared on tracks by Missy Elliott ("All N My Grill"), Trick Daddy ("In da Wind"), Jay-Z ("Poppin' Tags"), Killer Mike ("A.D.I.D.A.S."), Beyoncé ("Hip Hop Star"), Brooke Valentine ("Girlfight"), Sleepy Brown ("Margarita"), and Fantasia ("Hood Boy"). As a solo artist, the MC had a minor hit in 2005 with "Kryptonite (I'm on It)," one of the year's best rap singles; it was the lead single from the officially released showcase for his Purple Ribbon label, the eclectic Got Purp?, Vol. 2, which featured the likes of Killer Mike and Sleepy Brown, as well as protégé? Janelle Monáe. Also involved in film (ATL, OutKast's Idlewild, Who's Your Caddy?) and even the stage (he worked with the Atlanta Ballet in 2008), Big Boi prepped his first solo album, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, which was released on Def Jam in 2010.

Sir Lucious Left Footâ¦The Son of Chico Dusty was a few years in the making with a label change and all the attendant leaked tracks and snags. Big Boi's first proper solo album nonetheless sounds like it could have come together in a couple of drama-free (if somewhat frenzied) months. Itâs one of the loosest, most varied, and entertaining albums of its time. Big Boi is in top form, rattling off agile, head-spinning, and frequently irreverent tongue twisters like âWitness the n*gga that spit that vicious pitbull attack shit when it comes to this rap shitâ and âWhen sheâs liquored up Iâm leaving my fingerprints on her butt.â The variety of beats, most of which Big Boi co-produced, are even more mystifying, slathered in ideas yet robust in foundation. Whatâs most prominent in âTangerineâ is the knocking/snapping rhythm, but it enters with what could have developed into a grunge dirge and incorporates booming bass, a synthesizer vamp filtered through a large plastic tube, electro zaps, scorching guitar flameout, and some piano fit for a power balladâs coda. Itâs an eloquently crude strip-club anthem (of course). The superbly bombastic âGeneral Pattonâ is a melee of triumphant horns, a blasting opera choir, and rallying rhymes like âPick on somebody your own size and **** around, get kilt/But not like the kilt above the knees/BB will plant you n*ggas like seeds, or fertilizer for the trees.â Anchored in whomping bass and rattlesnake hi-hats, the battle anthem is capped by Big Rube's fathoms-deep-toned recitation of the slayedâs last rites. Bullfrog electro that quotes the System and Soul II Soul, a victory lap aided by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and loads of low-slung Southern funk â not to mention what sounds like a warm, bittersweet spin on Diddyâs âLast Nightâ â are also pulled off to equally excellent effect. Sir Lucious Left Foot lacks something as universally appealing and tidy as âThe Way You Move,â but that is not a problem â not when Big Boi casually conveys that he is as much an imaginative artist as his other half in OutKast.
