The Later Half Of The Beatles

The Beginners Guide To The Later Beatles

In the entry “ The Early Beatles “ I dealt with the years from 1962 to 1966
In this section I will look at the later years. I always regard the Beatles as having a two part history, up to and including 1967 they were on their up from 1967 it was on the on the way to break up. Up to and including their last album, The Beatles still continued to trail blaze both with their songs and their recording techniques but , the friendships were beginning to show signs of strain. IN addition they were growing into more mature rock stars and other influences that would shape their next phases were beginning to play a significant part.
I would recommend visiting the following websites:

This gives a potted history of the band but goes outside the years 1967-70

The introductory album I would suggest is

· The Beatles 1967-70

This like its sister album, gives a good oversight of the main recordings during the second half of the Beatles career.
Videos

  • Hello Goodbye gives a good idea of the Beatles at the height of psychedelic and Sgt Pepper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf2S7kKLtEQ

  • Hey Jude shows the Beatles still at the top without Brian and touching the edge of live performance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEKgYKpEJ3o&feature=fvst

  • Let It Be shows tired and split Beatles who can still come together to produce a good song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9SgDoypXcI

  • One More: apart , unhappy in some ways divided and near the end, Get Back shows that even at the darkest of times……………..The Beatles could still rock with the best of them..The Last Live performance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is interesting to look at the following
Let it Be ( The original album) vs Let It Be…………. Naked to see how the different parties saw this album.

Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

I don't get why people don't like Sgt Pepper much these days. I've always loved it - from my childhood when I first heard it, through my 'druggy' years when I related to it (for obvious reasons) to today when I still think it is an absolute classic for the innovative sounds and evocative moods it offers.

In my opinion it is way, way superior to either the White Album or Abbey Road (both of which have some poor to god awful tracks that let the whole thing down)

For the time in the summer of 1967 believe me people Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was it !!!!! It was the first time in radio history that an album got such tremendous airplay. Remember there wasn't a bonified so called 45s single from that album and the radio stations were playing every track that summer. The rock world had never experienced an album like this.

It was the first orchestral accompanied rock album and it remains the Beatles' Masterpiece even today. It still tops the best album charts that I have seen. A Day in a Life is my favorite Beatles' song even today some 44 years later. I still get chills when I hear it.

Bottom line - you had to be there !
