Here's my introduction, aka first post
#1
Hello any reader, I came here to try to open myself to some music I may not know and I could be missing. I'm 29, and up until now I listened to a lot of music and now I feel very weird since about 2 years.

I feel like I have discovered all the music I had to and that now I just have to listen to all the music I already have instead of trying to find it in new music.

Is there someone who understand how I feel? That's a tragedy in my life right now. I'll try to explain more clearly:

All the music I already love have builded-up my vision and knowledge of music. So on that basis, this music is now making me looking for the same feeling in new music, but paradoxically these feelings are there in the music I already possess so why search for what I already have (and why search an artist in another one? That's basically impossible)

But I can't stop discovering new music, that impossible!

I don't know what to do exactly. In the last 2 years, my musical exploration is stagnating. No new band and/or music style really grabbed my attention, with 1 or 2 exceptions. I just buy new albums from artists I already like (for example Rammstein and Cypress Hill are to be releasing a new album soon)

So this post is to hopefully start a discussion that will help me overcome this unwanted situation.

I feel very harsh toward new music, it have to be really incredible to meet my criterias. And I know that it is a little stupid and mind-closed to think like that.

But I need to clarify something: some new songs I hear now and then grab my attention and I do some music compilation cd, but nothing have made me discover a new band and/or artist that I really liked.

So if someone have someting to say, don't be shy!

Hi Drealm, & welcome to Music Discussion.

Without knowing your tastes, it's difficult to recommend anything, but maybe you should ignore new stuff for a while & investigate some older stuff. There's decades' worth of good quality old music out there !!

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you, and hope you enjoy the site...

Just to clarify another thing: when I say I'm harsh toward new music, I don't mean 2009 new music, but new music in my life, no matter if it is 1970, 1980, or 2000.

I tried a little to search old decades music but I probably not have done enough work. Suggestions are welcome, but not too much because if everyone gives me 5 bands, I will not know where to look. If someone have suggestion, just give me your favorite band/artist/composer, I think it can be a good way to start.

But all this is very difficult. Everyone have some personal feelings toward an artist he deeply like, so someone can give me his favorite of all time, that doesn't mean I will like it!

For example, one day I found Therion and now I deeply know that I found my best metal band. But each time I played a cd or talked about Therion to someone, he did not like it really.

So here's my top musical artists:

- Mike Oldfield
- Nobuo Uematsu
- Estradasphere
- Dead Can Dance
- Therion
- Ministry
- The Prodigy
- Glenn Stafford (for the legendary Warcraft 2 soundtrack)
- Enya
- Gorillaz
- Wintersun (only 1 album, but a masterpiece; waiting for the next in preparation)
- Guttermouth
- Nofx
- Fear Factory
- Rammstein
- Cypress Hill
- Mr Bungle
- Faith no More

I also really enjoy Nightwish, the last album (dark passion play) was a masterpiece. I like also:

- Leonard Cohen
- Air
- Metallica
- Moby
- others video games composers: Hiroki Kikuta, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yoko Shimomura, Motoi Sakuraba.
- Some films soundtrack

So that's enough. With that, you have a good idea of my tastes.

Any suggestions?

I don't know if you're into this type of music, but have you listened to Novembers Doom? They're a kind-of specialized sound, but i dig it.

Also check out Tool. and Dream Theater. Both very talented groups =]

OK, I'll make one suggestion:

You mention Dead Can Dance as a favourite. Check out This Mortal Coil, who weren't actually a band, more of a collective, and consisted of artists from the roster of the 4AD record company.

Dead Can Dance feature, as do Cocteau Twins, and the music isn't dissimilar to DCD's...

I appreciate your suggestions. But these band have a long discography...

Can you just recommend me one album I should begin with?

One for each 3 groups. Thanks!

I did some listening to them, and finally I really enjoyed The Pale Haunt departure by November's Doom. Great Metal. Thanks.

Dream Theater's Six Degree is very interesting, and I will give it more listen.

But Tool, it didn't get me. It's not the first time, as my cousin tried them on me earlier in my life and it didn't worked out too. I'm just not suited for them.
