I was thinking more that it's easier for bands to record and sell their own music, on a small scale at least without involving anyone else - seems pretty punk to me.
I do think that people deserve to get paid for their work so I don't think free music is a right but illegal downloading presumably hurts the most commercially successful bands most, not something that weighs heavily on punk bands.
I also have to mention that you seem pretty prescriptive in what instruments 'should' be used - I don't get this at all - if it sounds like punk I don't care what they use.

I like the free music thing, and agree with CMB: Before, bands would struggle in obscurity, hoping some record executive would show up at a club one night. Now they can put up a website, put something on YouTube, etc., and get their stuff out there...DIY.
I don't think most of bands' income should be from royalty checks. I think it should come from playing concerts. That sounds "punk" as well: staying close to the fans and making it more about raw expression than production and polish.
As I've said before, nobody owns any song; it's all stolen, so to speak. The idea that any song is original is an idea fabricated by the business side so they can control the money.
Instead of touring to promote their album, bands should put out albums to promote their tour. Having to prove their worth as musicians in person keeps them more honest than sitting by their mailbox waiting for royalty checks.

my point about the instruments is that being authentic is being able to play great music with what you've got both musically and lyrically and if you were strapped to the bare essentials ie the basic instruments and not any flashy effects and artificial sounds you can produce the same quality of performance and music.
then again, punk musically was based around making a point that simplicity is the best way to get the point across - their words meant so much more than the fact that they predominantly used 3 chords and had a fast beat so the focus would be on the lyrics rather than the complexity and how they made those sounds because they could be easily replicated. but hey, that is my opinion.

and that works out great if the lyrics are audible. Dead Kennedys come to mind.

I suppose sometimes it's just about the chaos - which also works

at times, i end up reading the album jacket as i listen to the album... kinda like reading poetry. IMO, listening to music has to be a special experience, in my room with my record player and hi-fi.

totaly agree, and would add, with the headphones.
When you say album jacket, are you referring to vinyl?
That's what I hated about the switch from vinyl to CD format. Just not the same additional material there used to be. If there is, at my age, even though I wear glasses, still need a magnifying glass to read some of it.

Well, if you know where to look, you should be able to attain vinyls for most records out there... it's convenient cos in Sydney, every 2-3 months there is a radio station that sells their vinyls that they don't want and over the years (i'm still young so my collection isn't HUGE but is relatively big) have found some great ones; there was one about 2-3 weeks ago and got my hands on the whole dire straits studio album discography for a measly 25 bucks... AMAZING when i played them back at home...
regarding the headphones... i need to get me a good pair of them otherwise i would... phew... my amp has a headphone jack... sweet. next on the shopping list.

To me, punk doesn't have to be complicated... But it isn't tied down to simplicity... The music should be easy to follow, yet it should stand out with a memorable riff, or drum fill, or bass line... A majority of the lyrics should go against the norm... or they at least cannot be infested with cliches... leave that to the so called "pop artists"...
