I notice you said producer rather than artist
how has the meaning of the word producer changed from say 30 years ago
what is the job of the producer I guess is what I mean

Nowadays with many artists having access to hi-end recording software/gear, the line between artist and producer has been blurred, as more artists are able to self-produce their tracks...making the entire arrangement using midi and software synths on their computers. Also, many producers who make "beats" and "tracks" for other artists also front their own work at times for the exposure. This is usually more common in the electronic/dance/hiphop genres. However, even back in the day, bands like Zeppelin, Queen, etc. self-produced their albums...so technically they could be considered producers as well.
