I just joined and hope to be well received.
I'm likely the oldest member. Been at the electric guitar since 1960. I play Blues and Blues-based music, in bands, I suck solo.
If anyone is interested Guadalajara is a great city, lots of nightlife, even with a stinky economy.
We play 2 one-hour sets here and just about every band I know of starts late, about 11. Seems odd to me but it's one of those places where people come out late.
We all earn the going rate which is 500 Pesos a night each. That's 40USD. It's more that I was ever paid in Dallas/Ft Worth where I lived before.
The people are very animated during the songs. My being a Gringo (white guy) draws some attention. They like just about everything we play. We have a girl who sings and she's blessed with a terrific voice .. she hardly needs a mike. She does Janis and all that stuff.
Musical gear is expensive here. About double what it was in Texas. I'm poor. I've owned two American guitars in the last 5 years. One was a Gibson 335 Dot reissue which I came here with and sold for a huge profit. The other I still have, it's an early Peavey T60. Don't use it much. Good for rhythm tho.
The Mexicans aren't into brand name snobbery as are many Americans. My stuff is all Asian. It's better that way. Lots of crime downtown.
There are probably five Blues bands, maybe one or two Country, lots of Metal, and of course a million Mariachis. There is another type called Banda. It Nortanos music, you know hum pah hum pah with a rockier sort of beat. And the big one is Cumbia. It's almost Reggae-like. No much Salsa here, more common on the Caribbean side.
Thanks for reading.
