"Fun" bands--an ongoing series
#11
I wrote on this guy in another Thread about comedy. So he doesn't get lost or buried, I'm posting here: The Rev. Billy C. Wirtz. 6'7" with flaming red hair and tatted up/down/sideways, he's a serious bluesman who always wraps it in fall-down funny comedy. From high wit to low-down, it's all good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt8styUkbT4 << stretches out a bit on this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm4rGMG4UOc << the Manic Monger of Mashups at it again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlksjsgu8VA << toured for a bit with a serious bluesman, Victor Wainwright
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ltexj_2UTQo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5jq45lWhGM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAiwS24wPTE

BONUSES (or is it BONI?):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ASS79Nj1sM << with Robert Gordon's band--kick-ass!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANpbscdNurg << sittin' in with Commander Cody--ain't nuttin' but a party goin' on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgM5YPQWxjE << 1 more by Mr. Wainwright

The Rev.'s wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverend_Billy_C._Wirtz

Some serious health problems behind him now, he has some summer shows in a good venue in Florida. He's doing well and doing good.

Thanks for the compliment--I'm not ego-bound but enlightened praise always works...About The Toad-lickers, UrbanDictionary (THE reference for all things culturally cutting-edge) has this: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.ph...%20Licking Hadn't thought of Genesis as a "fun" band but that era band sure rocks. A kvetch: with the exception of Oingo Boingo, Asteroids Galaxy Tour, and Thomas Dolby, I don't see the degree of playfulness to fit here (and even AGT has "matured"). Not busting or being the Hall Monitor, you understand, just questioning.

Yeah, I agree. Trying to find a those other bands as "playful" and "quirky" enough to an exaggerated degree was a bit of a stretch. lol
Still good sounding fun groups though!

Okay well here is one more that I know will fit right in here..

Kinda forgot about these folks, but in a quirky way, they symbolized the disco era to me: Kid Creole and the Coconuts. August Darnell sure had and has a sense of fun and brought that forth for all of us. Here's a 2011 interview on his then-current disc on his life, thoughts, feelings and what he's up to lately: http://thequietus.com/articles/07082-kid...st-darnell << Don't forget the "Comments" *

Dr. Buzzard's Original "Savannah" Band is the first of his creations (with his brother) and first got me hooked on his concepts and executions
One thing is an utter verity about whatever he's done: It's witty, and got a good beat and you can dance to it.

* No disloyalty to MD to say this comes from a terrif music Website: http://thequietus.com
NB: From that article, a quote from Mr. Darnell: " The beauty of music is its possibilities for mutation, and that mutation represents a larger global ideal: global co-existence." He's got it in one, with that.

Austin Lounge Lizards Brilliantly skewering all manner of pop genres (their main vein is country/bluegrass). Putting out albums and lightly touring since '84 and all the discs are well-crafted. Helps to have musical knowledge of what they're mocking but their stuff stands on its own. Here's a discog and wiki: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/austin-lo...iscography and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Lounge_Lizards Here's what they do:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q75qJ3vCmBw << not a good example of their humor--I just like it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbvrRct-TXc << now we're talkin'...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nN7txUSrgs << I concur...and I don't even have a cur
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48H9MV-uPdg << another poor concert vid--I just wanted to show what they looked like...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZpXj0CLk6U << here's what the songs sound like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ1tMp8Q0dU << nails this folk icon to the wall
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9zWh9gR4...AbPNlmR4UR << another sub-genre forever altered
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnE5zvosplc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO30Yznbnrg << I'll never again listen to Kenny Rogers the same way again
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVrhaYjyLVo << pleased somebody recorded this concert

Thing of it is, they are all superior players who love the musics they so deliciously satirize--good harmony too. Check'm out.

Cowboy Junkies and Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band Both were real outfits with AMG listings and everything. The have one strong thing in common: Deanna Bogart was part of both. Each big fun in very different ways.

Cowboy Junkies I defer to AMG for info: http://www.allmusic.com/album/thats-what...0000312034 << not together all that long...damn shame, they sure had a concept down cold...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqcRx-ydsBA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-glXABAb2Q
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlDbUiBQwoo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPzQAqtXKP8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wco-GOxsNWk << well she wasn't "The Only Girl in the Band" here

Root Boy Slim Now this is special (in all it's modern meanings). Can't fault the concept but his voice...takes some getting used to. Again I rely on AMG: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/root-boy-...0000340542 << "...obvious and contrived..." is an understatement. A love'm/hate'm outfit on a large scale.:
If you are weak of heart or stomach, listen to the intro remarks outside the club on the 1st tune and then depart.:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roC_JLOcnxE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEt6U0DD4CU << undoubtedly auto-biographical
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqnD11rjrtc << I like'm scaled-up/robust MyDamnSelf...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFkzfJCSg-c << a bit political, d'ya think?

When is a band not a band? When is a cover not a cover? Haven't gone Buddhist on you--honest, this-world questions. The California Raisins--a brilliant marketing concept, well done claymation execution
