Toussaint McCall Louisiana soul singer who had 1 big hit and a couple of lesser ones. Seems to have dropped out of music after that, which is a shame. Excellent organ player too. Here's his skimpy wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toussaint_McCall

Glad to see the best jazz violinist of our era spotlighted (some may quibble with my designation--ignore them). Just 2 things to add: she won a MacArthur Prize (the "genius grant") and after years on jazz labels, her newest is on Sony Masterworks label--their classical label. I urge you to look at her AMG discog listing--unusually enough, all have reviews and they love'm. Here's on her newest: http://www.allmusic.com/album/southern-c...0002613290
Wanna get in touch...or even hire her (you never know who's gonna read this site) ?: http://reginacarter.com/
My dream? Seeing her, Renee Rosnes and Esperanza Spalding in a trio setting.

Stacy Mitchhart Runs a horn-driven soul-blues outfit in Nashville. Won the IBC "Most Promising Guitarist..." in '03. His is newest CD is a bit of a departure as he gets more "down home". 8 CDs in 10 years including 2 live (his Website claims 12). Plays 200+ dates a year without traveling far from home (the advantage of playing in a tourist city--the audience comes to him). His Site: http://stacymitchhart.com/index.html

Dave Slonaker Big Band Enlists the cream of LA-area studio/session and jazz players to blow some crazy-great charts. This should maybe be in "Local Heroes" 'cuz they don't travel--but the hip in LA sure know them. http://daveslonaker.com/bigband/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MliQtjFi86Q << somebody did us a solid by putting up these Capitol sessions
Mr. Slonaker's is by no means the only modern big band in the LA area--there's such a huge pool of talent there that loves to play more complex charts...Look in the sidebars for Ralph Macchia and Dave Grusin and others. If you are a budding fan or player, there's a lot out there for you.
