Let's Compose... - Edd Caine - 05-08-2013
I realise this is going to sound like self-promotion, so let me put it another way.
I have started something new, especially for me. I am a composer in his 30s, just finished a PhD and am wondering what to do with my life and how to go about it. You may not realise, but there is pretty much zilch out there for classical composers. It's almost impossible to make a living off of the hard graft that we go through.
So, in an effort to try something new, I've started a YouTube series called "Let's Compose" which follows me through the composition process as I write pieces. It's not just about me - it's aimed at young people interested in getting into composition and presents various aspects of my own compositional process. It's not a tutorial either, as I don't believe that composition is something you can teach.

Interesting. I also am a classical, though I have turned to other genres of late. I compose my own songs at the moment, and I believe that my classical training has strongly influenced my musical tensions. Yes, you can't teach composing. Just the techiniques necessary to boost your original ideas. I will be following you with keen interest, Edd Caine.

Ah...choirs...any great ones out there today? I especially enjoy the Eastern European choirs that sing acapella and use different vocalese to create fascinating sounds!

I'm not sure I would call myself an anything really, apart from a musician. It's kind of strange actually - when I was young I aspired to be a virtuoso pianist, and a classical musician, but it's been a while since I really identified wholly with classical music as a genre, although I'm aware that my output very much lies within that tradition. I think it's like a comfortable set of clothes - you just get so used to wearing them that you forget they're there

I am watching this video and I just realised I do not have a bloody clue what is going on. The only thing I recognize from this is the Amalfi Coast which happens to be my favourite spot in the world. (see my website)
