question for Jerome! - CRAZY-HORSE - 28-06-2013

hey J-Man,
you posted somewhere the other week that you do not own any Beatle albums and do not really rate the Sgt.Peppers album as high as others obviously do so:

1. why do you not own any albums?

2.do you own any of their solo albums?

3. do you rate john and Paul as great writers?

4. what is it about the Beatles that doesnt obviously sit well with you?

5. which Beatle songs(if any) do you love and which ones(obviously the ones you know) do you dislike?

this may take you a while to answer but your reply would be appreciated at some point mate!

ok, so heres my take on The Beatles:

i own all their albums, all of Macca's, a couple of Ringo's, several George albums, and own a couple of boxsets of Johns solo output, which covers most of his officially released solo songs...

on the Beatles, i find one maybe two tracks on each album that i dont like, but mostly i fond them enjoyable
i dont rate Sgt.Peppers as high as most music lovers neither, i think the whole thingf sounds dated and hasnt aged well IMO
on Macca, i love the guy and his music, the only problem i have is that he sticks to his formula year in year out.
John,i think he is an intelligent writer who is not affraid to spill out his feelings and emotions in the public arena warts n all, and i dislike "imagine" with a passion(so does Bob Dylan according to a 1981 interview i recently read in rolling stone)
George, very good lyricist,ok vocals, great guitarist, but albums are often patchy to say the least
Ringo...useless waste of space as a drummer, vocalist and albums are terrible at best

thanks for taking the time to read this mate, i eagerly await your summery of these guys, their music and your answers to my questions

poor Ringo

question for Jerome! - Jerome - 28-06-2013

Wow, where do I start?

First of all I do not dislike any Beatles music apart from 'Yellow Submarine' & Hey Jude.
On the whole I find their music very palatable but I have not found anything that really gets under my skin. (line from Hey Jude??!??) That answers the first question.

Yes I do own many of the solo albums. For me personally, their writing had matured individually and they had shaken off that 'Love Me Do' stuff. I can understand why that was all popular - I used to listen to it myself, many many times. But it never stuck. I also used to play a couple of those old Beatles songs in pubs and you would always get a reaction, but it was more of a let's have a good time thing as opposed to let's really listen to this stuff. That sorts out question 2.

J & P were great writers - period. But I think they both achieved their best work outside of the Beatles - just my opinion. That's 3 dealt with.

I do not know how to answer question 4. They just do not have the same appeal to me as other bands do. I think it has something to do with the actual sounds used but I am really not sure.

Question 5 - Let It Be & Mr Moonlight are my favourites - ??!?? As for the ones I do not like see first line in this text.

I am not knocking the Beatles - they were and probably still are the most influential band in the history of popular music. Just not my thing.

My brother was - and still is - a Beatles nut. It was when he came home from the Navy one day with a copy of 'Wish You Were Here' under his arm that I really sat up and took notice. And I can't say why on that one either! But when I heard the opening strains of 'Shine On' I was in another world. I am still there. And to date there has been no ship available to retrieve my sorry soul.............

I will now don my flak jacket for the impending counter-attack. Shields up! (lol)

Wasn't it Rusty who said - imagine what they would have done if they had continued. They were 'On the Threshold of a Dream'. But life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans............

No no no no ...listen to the drums on the Beatle songs my friends ! Listen to the medley on Abbey Road ! A seasoned veteran drummer , a friend of mine, said his rhythm and timing were spot on and that he was a very good drummer ...he had to be to hold the music together folks ! ...he was the singer of funny light hearted novelty songs....Yellow Submarine, Act Naturally, Octopusses Garden, ...I wish he hadn't sung A Little Help from My Friends...such a great song on its' own !

Just one last point on this subject from me and then I'll shut up. A lot of my old friends from SA who are 'beatlefreaks' are also big fans of Crowded House. And I do have all of their albums - go figure......
