The girls' parents were gospel singers, and before long the children were singing in their local church choir, eventually turning up on the Bobby Jones Gospel show on BET. The siblings joined the Michael Matthews traveling gospel show Mama I'm Sorry in 1995, followed by a second Matthews production, Sneaky. Each sister subsequently toured as a backup singer for a variety of R&B acts. Meanwhile, they wrote contemporary gospel material with crossover appeal. A meeting with producer Warryn Campbell (who would eventually marry Erica) led to a song publishing deal, and "Dance," a song the sisters wrote and performed with Robin S., appeared on the soundtrack to Dr. Doolittle in 1998. Later that year, "Let Go, Let God" was used on The Prince of Egypt -- Inspirational, and their songs were also recorded by 702 and Yolanda Adams. Mary Mary then signed as a recording act to Columbia/C2 Records and released the debut single "Shackles (Praise You)," a Top Ten R&B and Top 40 Hot 100 hit that was followed by the album Thankful in May 2000. Thankful was a huge success with Christian audiences, offering a younger, hipper version of gospel that audiences could relate to. Two years later, the duo released Incredible, an album whose material was largely written by the sisters themselves. Both Erica and Tina became mothers before their self-titled album appeared in 2005. It was the duo's first album to enter the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 chart. The Sound, released in 2008, performed even better; it debuted at number seven and was Mary Mary's most crossover-savvy album yet, benefiting from Campbell's role as the set's sole producer. Two singles, "Get Up" and "God in Me," topped the Dance Music/Club Play chart, while the latter also hit number one on the Hot Gospel Songs chart. Something Big, featuring productions from Campbell and a handful of fellow collaborators, was issued in 2011. The next year, they starred in a We channel reality series, Go Get It, and released a soundtrack -- featuring old and new material -- that May. Album Review from root magazine In just 12 short years, Erica and Tina, better known to the world as Mary Mary, has had better success than most artists in any genre of music. Their debut album âThankfulâ came at a time when it was needed most and broke all kinds of records, ultimately selling over a million copies and earning them a Grammy award their first time out. Some attribute their success to their mainstream appeal, other contribute it to their striking good looks and a major record label. But the truth of the matter is that these sisters can simply flat out sing and have one heck of a producer in Warryn Campbell. With a successful WeTV reality show, âMary Maryâ, under their belt, the Campbell sisters have not let pregnancy stop them and found time to deliver a new album aptly titled âGo Get Itâ. The albumâs first single of the same name is a fiery hip- hop infused track that begins where âGod In Meâ and âWalkingâ left off. The song encourages the listener to go after everything that God has for them and whatever they have gone through in the past will make you stronger. Itâs your time to go get it! If you watch their reality show every Thursday night as I do, you also saw the episode where they recorded this song and you got to see first hand all of the passion they put in that song, which makes you feel that much more connected to the song. Other songs on the album include songs from their five previous gold and platinum albums (not counting A Mary Mary Christmas), such as: âLittle Girlâ, âGood To Meâ feat. Destinyâs Child, âHe Saidâ, âAnd Iâ feat. Kirk Franklin, âWalkingâ, âGod In Meâ (which according to Billboard magazine, has earned the highest rank for a song that has spent 52 weeks on a chart in the Nielson SoundScan era since 1992). While songs like âGod Blessâ, âDirtâ, âCanât Give Up Nowâ and âIâm Runningâ all received a bit of a boost in the mastering and remixing department. The only other new song besides âGo Get Itâ is a song entitled âSunday Morningâ which is another infectious track with a sixties swing appeal to it. I can just picture a hot music video for this songâ¦trust me youâre gonna love it. Just one year after the release of their critically acclaimed albumâSomething Bigâ, Mary Mary have done it again and remind us with some of their catalog, why they continue to be successful. Now if you are thinking that this is a Greatest Hits album, it is not (That would have to be a double CD . âGo Get Itâ is a soundtrack to the WeTV reality show and if you listen carefully, you will see that most of the aforemetioned songs play throughout the season of the show.
