Many of us here at MD like different types (I'll avoid the word "genre" on CH's behalf) Confusedmile: of music.

I recently looked at Pitchfork Magazine's website ( just for something to do...casual browsing) and I found over 50 new album releases and they were all reviewed. They all looked interesting enough for a listen since I haven't heard most of them. These groups like Bon Ivor, Fleet Foxes, EMA, The Vaccines have been mentioned on MD but a lot of the others have not !

How can a devoted music enthusiast take it all in ? If I only liked Jazz, for example, then it would be easier..but I like mostly everything !!!!

I know what you mean Steve! Only some many hours in a day and I have to work some of those hours.....

Music Head and i discussed this very issue....there is no way to keep up with every artist and/or album release nowadays.

now, what i try to do is i try to listen to a new album by an artist i am not sure of at least two or three times a week, i avoid artists i know well as i generally buy their material regardless. alternatively i will ask Corey to pick out a new release for me to buy, he usually picks three of four and i then pick one to purchase with no prior knowledge so it is a surprise when i press 'play'.

i also tend to use 'youtube' to look at new chart entries and/or check out MTV on a weekend.

I have faced this one a while ago and in the end I did not solve it in anyway............but I did find something out.........the more I tried to solve this and work toward hearing all that I could...............the more I found myself not enjoying my listening any more.................It became a job, with targets to meet and I was listening to things so that I didn't miss anything...............thus I stopped enjoying my listening................so now I just take it as it comes , I try to take some note but I don't get too obsessed ............I just try to enjoy what I do and back has come the pleasure again.............

That sums it up for me too...I was tired of that pressure to perform in listening and discovering new music. I just take my time to enjoy now, even if it means discovering only 4 albums in a year.

I just take my time, and focus on what I really want to check out. I seem to find enough nuggets to keep me happy.

Research, research, research...

I don't have as much time to listen to music as I would like and especially to REALLY listen. It's not just the amount of music I have trouble finding time for but the quality time I spend with music. These days it's often playing in the background where as I used to spend hours just giving a band or artist my undivided attention. This is one of the reasons I appreciate my iPod and iPhone because I can take music with me and listen whenever I find myself with down time but as was said in another the post that's destroying the sound quality and I don't have as many neat little trophies (albums) to display on my shelf.

I stick to genres I like as there is enough in those to last a lifetime. On the odd occasion I do some impulse buying just to try something completely new. I would say 9 times out of 10 I am disappointed, but every now and then I find a real gem hidden amongst the drab, bland mechandise on offer.

I subscribe to the AMG new releases, browse the Amazon new releases weekly and belong to several forums. All of which takes time, but I love music of all types, have over 6,000 CDs in my collection and it grows weekly. It's a passion and an obsession with me.
