Best City to Start a Band? - PaintsWithSound - 27-02-2011 Hey guys, I'm Malcolm, and I play guitar and other stuff. I'm currently waiting to whether or not i've been accepted to The Berklee College of Music. If i get in, I'm going there. BUT, if I don't, I want to put a band together, move somewhere, and really give the business a serious try. The question on my mind though, is where? What city has the most small venues, cheap housing, and has the best live music scene in general? The band would be kind of an experimental folk band (as stupid as that sounds), so on the chiller side of things. Because of this i was thinking Seattle or Portland. Any suggestions are welcome, as well as any advice/anything. Thank you! Best City to Start a Band? - Music Head - 27-02-2011 this question sounds familiar Best City to Start a Band? - PaintsWithSound - 01-03-2011 Sorry, I'm new. I just didnt know where would be an appropriate place to ask my question. BUT, I just found out tonight that I did in fact get in, so if i start a band, it'll be in Boston. Best City to Start a Band? - Music Head - 06-06-2011 Seriously, you went through all that to post a link to Fox News? Give me a break Best City to Start a Band? - JTRiff - 08-06-2011 You have to get to the 3rd World to escape the machine, and even then ... LA is OK, if you are willing to put in a year or two waiting, and then work for slightly less than we got in the 70s, that's how it's set up.. Also, pay-to-play has to be dealt with. The Whiskey-a-go-go for ex: is poison. Down the street, there's a place or three that still have some class, and will cut a reasonable deal under the table. I heard Washington DC was OK. Austin is full, forget it. Same for Nashville. Memphis rocks, but you have to actually be able to play, unlike Hellywood and other places Canada is the worst, don't be fooled. It's pretty bad... they are sealing off the entire industry, right down to the level of a thirty buck gig. |
