Would you listen to music in a language you didn't understand? - coykiesaol - 12-01-2011 I remember when i started my quest to hear every song in the world (an endeavor that would turn out to be fruitless), i started listening to stuff i didn't understand, it was really hard to be interested because it just didn't sound good to me, until i found a few russian bands that i fell in love with (and tried to learn russian because of, i know some, not alot) and listened to even though at the time i couldn't understand.. i can't explain why one language sounded good to me and all the others didn't at all, but i was wondering what other people think of this. Would you listen to music in a language you didn't understand? - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-01-2011 LOL i know what you mean about different languages sounding good or bad...the French could mention 'doggy doo' and it would sound seductive! some languages, say middle eastern, chinese, croat, german sound aggressive others like irish,US southern drawl, canadian, italian have a sexy feel to them. as for different languages in song, i dont think it really matters that much as i rely on the 'feel' of it to get me in, afterall, music is the only universal language, sorry!, along with love and war Would you listen to music in a language you didn't understand? - gryphon - 12-01-2011 This is an interesting one, Being basically bilingual, gives one some sort of insight into listening in a language other than your own. For sure the language you listen to the music should not make a difference and infact to the overall sound I don't think it does......................If it is worth listening to then it is worth listening to. That is that However, i believe when it comes down to understanding that is a different factor. You will never get the understanding that your own language can give you unless you become very proficient. Different languages have their own ways of expressing emotion: German has its own style which is unequaled in any other European language but unless you are a native speaker then you will not get access. Symbolism also matters and is relative to the language ................. I think this is swings and roundabouts but just because it is in a foreign language does not mean it should be lost to anyone who does not speak that language.
Would you listen to music in a language you didn't understand? - Tiggi - 12-01-2011 I have a bit of an appetite for African music, which comes in a variety of different languages. With this stuff I often haven't the first idea of the lyrical content, but Africans have a way with seductive music. I'd prefer to understand lyrics, but if the music's good it doesn't matter much. I often don't understand a word they're saying but I love the mixture of Indian flavour with dance music beats so I don't care.
