There are so many brilliant jazz artists out there and appears to be many lovers of jazz here. I was wondering who you would have if you had to make your own band? Can be anyone throughout history.

This should make for interesting reading.

I've thought about this, and can't quite get my head round it !!

There are loads of Jazz musicians & singers that I love, but I can't imagine what would work well together.

How about this:

Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, & Ed Thigpen (The early 60's Oscar Peterson Trio), augmented by:

Miles Davis on tpt.

Sonny Rollins on ts.

Billie Holiday on vocal chords.

Don't know if this could work, but I'd like to hear it. I expect someone will post to tell me that they made a string of acclaimed albums in the 40's .

How about you, my Manic friend ??

I was fortunate enough, at least from around 1988 until around 1993, to have sang in a band called Tony Barnard's All Hat Jazz with some of the finest jazz players that Australia had to offer at the time.
A CD was recorded in Sydney back in 1990, but never saw the light of day until it was finally released on Peter Ind's WAVE Records in the U.K. in January 1999.
Tony Barnard himself is now married and been living in London since late-1995 and plays with the Ronnie Scott's Big Band.

I agree with Tiggi about Oscar Peterson, but preferred the trio that featured Joe Pass (guitar) and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass). With those blokes you just didn't need a drummer.
As to a vocalist, I would go for Ella Fitzgerald or Annie Ross among the women with either Mel Tormé or Jon Hendricks among the blokes.

Strewth, mate !!

I've got a copy of that CD. Contains some great instrumentals !!

Sorry, Beachy. The old jokes are the best !!

You'll keep Tigger!
Must be honest though and say that I do reckon it's got some great 'instrumentals' on it too.

Hmm...

Guitars: three way harmonies between Fred Frith, John McLaughlin, and Bill Frisell ... Maybe have Mar Ribot in there too to add to the madness.

Bass: Bill Laswell

Saxophone: Ornette Coleman and John Zorn on alto sax

Drums: Joey Baron

Piano: Thelonius Monk and Sun Ra

Vocals: Yamatsuka Eye

Yeah... That'd be crazy.
