NEW MUSIC FRIDAY REVIEW 20.12.24 #11

DRIVE - SZA (5/10)
This deep yet lighter acoustic R&B ballad fails to live up to a deluxe track on SZA's SOS. It's alright, but I can't say I'm happy with this; it feels like a "meh" option to push as a single and doesn't really reflect well on the known side of SOS.

30 For 30 - SZA/Kendrick Lamar (5/10)
Featuring on SZA's Lana album, this marks yet another collaboration between SZA and Kendrick. I'm going to go ahead and call this out for being boring. SZA and Kendrick have finally lost their chemistry together and just sound like their usual selves, but toned down and disappointing. Everyone hyping this up is just going along with the crowd.

OK - Katy Perry (2/10)
This was a train wreck of a song! The beat completely clashes with the vocals and lyrics, and nothing here matches. This is the work of a toddler! Also, Katy obviously didn’t learn her lesson about getting Dr. Luke on tracks, because he helped make this. This is everything Katy’s critics and even fans told her not to do—and why even release a deluxe album? You already released Woman's World, which was ear-bleeding, and now this... this is gross.

Beautiful That Way - Miley Cyrus (5/10)
Well, this was boring. She tries to add some glamour to it as it's for The Last Showgirl, but this really lacks Miley's true musical talent and feels like it’s not her. I will never understand how this got nominated for a Golden Globe. At most, it’s light and simple, giving a connecting feeling to some, but after multiple listens, it still won’t click with me.

Where'd It Go Wrong? - D4vd (7/10)
With a blend of slow and gradually changing-paced R&B, this partly reminds me of a Joji song. It's a boom sound with slow-timed vocals that could put you to sleep and ease you down perfectly! This is art, and I mean it! I've been a d4vd listener for nearly three years, and this is peak!

Take Me to the Beach - Imagine Dragons/Ado (7/10)
The two have chemistry together on this pop-J-pop song. As much as I might be the only one to rate this song highly, or among the mere few, I think this really has potential to get radio play and chart. I don’t get why it didn’t.

GOT DAMN - Gunna (6/10)
Gunna actually releases something good! The bars on this went smoothly with the rhythm, and it sounds like something that has charting ability. Despite the autotune and cuts, this still works well—a case of simpler rap working!

Die Together - J. Cole (3/10)
His career has been reduced to shreds. This year was a joke for J. Cole, and this continues the jokes.

Fancy - Artemas (4/10)
Released along with his song xvideos, this showcases that Artemas is getting more and more bland within his music. Everything feels dull and regurgitated in a slightly different way to make another song. He’s also just a "TikTok music" artist.

Bundle By Bundle - Burna Boy (5.5/10)
Forming as an afrobeats party song, it has the beat and vocals that could work, but the swagger just doesn’t do too much for me. The song ends up sounding like a poor viral attempt that merely scrapes the bar of okay.

YOUNG CRACKA - Lil Mabu (2/10)
Lil Mabu is a joke of a human being. Leaked clips show him being nice to teachers and a good school kid, but the moment he got out, he’s suddenly some gangster. This guy literally allowed a toddler onto one of his rap songs and released one of the worst albums of the year. This hardcore rap showcases everything Mabu is not; it’s all fake. To his fans: you’re not tough. I’m not going to go into the full lore of the repetitive nonsense rap and the cr*p Mabu has said, but it’s lengthy as heck. I feel this beat could’ve been saved too, but sadly, it was wasted on Mabu, who doesn’t fit it.

POP POP POP - IDLE (6/10)
Meaningless spoken words that were somehow saved by the backbeat and mixing.

All of Me - Nao (5/10)
Sounds unique.

Thank You - Hyunjin (8/10)
Not a clue what the English translation of the lyrics was (I couldn’t find it), but this is peaceful and a song you can sit down or stand up to! Amazing!

Myth - Acloudyskye (5/10)
