Crazy's 2024 new release purchases - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-12-2024

as is tradition at the end of the year i listen to, rate and rank all the albums/EP's that were released in 2024 that i purchased:

so this year was a pretty good year (and expensive year LOL) for myself and Lynne.

the final results are:

24 vinyl LP's
01 vinyl EP's
16 compact disks

4 of those vinyl albums were also purchased on cd
so less 4cds there 37 albums to rate and rank from favorite to least favorite which means i need to get my butt into gear to get them all done by years' end.

for those who cannot or do not know the rating system:
*     -  i do not like it
**   -  i like it
*** -  i love it

Lynne and I also purchased the new Avril Lavigne compilation which was released this year plus we picked up the "50th anniversary UV printed clear vinyl" version of Dark Side Of The Moon.

ROD STEWART with JOOLS HOLLAND  "swing fever"

release date:  23rd Feb 2024

chart stats:   #1 UK,  #19 AU

format owned:  vinyl, signed by Rod and Jools as a pre-sale special

a collection of standards mostly from the jazz and blues genres
Rod's voice is just about shot now but he can get away with it with these sorts of songs
Jools' tinkling the ivories is subtle yet effective
a decent album for what it is worth

RE: Crazy's 2024 new release purchases - Ruby - 07-12-2024

^Good going CH. I'm sure the industry loves you guys! And thank goodness for people who still purchaser the real thing. I had a modest year myself, aside from a couple of CD's and one lonely LP that I bought to support a local business - The Pentangle (1968). I have also bought some digital albums. Sign o' the times! Looking forward to reading this thread.  Cool

RE: Crazy's 2024 new release purchases - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-12-2024

thanks Ruby, i deliberately did not post all our purchases so there would be some surprises along the way.

there will be rock, pop, country, folk/americana, alternative, rap, easy listening, soul/r+b, a movie soundtrack album ( its companion piece) and the jazz album i just posted, so something for everybody hopefully.

JACK WHITE  "no name"

release date:  19th July 2024

chart stats:   US #108. UK #33, AU #9

format owned:  vinyl

his sixth solo album albeit an accidental release
originally given away at his Third Man Record stores if customers purchased 2 or more LP's in store
album had a plain white cover with "no name" written on it and Jack's name wasnt even featured.
some of the people who were lucky enough to get these freebies then realised it was Jack White and tried to up the price to insane numbers and sell on ebay. White then decided to release the album officially because he was not impressed with the price gouging.
anyway,
pretty much a straight forward rock/garage rock album this time round but still very much Jack White sounding
probably a bit unfair posting this one because his albums grow over time and are not instantly grabbing for me
and if i have one issue with it then it is because it is all too much of the same thing throughout, that said though...

CROWDED HOUSE  "gravity stairs"

release date:  31st May 2024

chart stats:  #3 AU, #4 NZ, #8 UK

format owned:  compact disk (signed by band as purchased presale)

their eighth studio album
more subdued than what one would expect for Crowded House but a couple of uptempo tracks here
more great songwriting from Finn as would be expected from such a quality artist
probably nothing on here that would entice new fans into his world but a good album nonetheless

JOAQUIN PHOENIX & LADY GAGA  "the joker: folie a deux" (soundtrack)

release date:  4th October 2024

chart stats:  UK soundtrack chart  #1,  US soundtrack chart  #6

format owned:  vinyl (because Lynne and I own all of Gaga's albums on vinyl)

soundtrack to the movie of the same name starring the two actors
opening track is sung by Nick Cave, the rest by Gaga or Phoenix.
jazzy tunes for the most part but some contemporary covers also
had never heard Phoenix sing prior to this and he isnt too bad in the confines of a movie soundtrack
have not seen the movie yet but i will at some point

CHARLEY CROCKETT  "$10 cowboy"

release date:  26th April 2024

chart stats:   US Country #30, AU #78,  UK Country #3

format owned:  vinyl

his thirteenth studio album, first i have heard
direct descendent of Frontiersman Davey Crockett
country and soul vibes happening on this album
has an almost Ben Harper type sound and vocal quality in places
i just noticed he released a companion album in July of 2024 called "$10 cowboy: visions of dallas",
i suppose i should invest in that at some point, or at least give it a listen

GREEN DAY -  "saviors"

release date:  19th January 2024

chart stats:   US #4,  UK #1,  AU #2,  CAN  #4

format owned:  compact disk

their fourteenth studio album, i own twelve from memory
a welcome return to their early sounds as opposed to the more mellow sounds of their last couple of albums
first two tracks still prove they can deliver the goods, though not as consistent as they used to be able to do
certainly could have done with track trimming as album started to wane towards the end
but that said, overall
