The Byrds anyone??? - CRAZY-HORSE - 02-04-2022

okay everyone.
i have a double cd compilation of the band which i love and a couple of vinyl compilations from back in the day that my parents have since given to me as they no longer play their vinyl...
anyway,
i just ordered this 13cd set of studio albums (11 albums, two of which were doubles), so all of their studio albums on "columbia records".
the whole thing has cost me a paltry $60 (including delivery from Europe).
as i have not heard any of their studio albums i am wondering if this is just good value or excellent value?

my rankings:

1.5    "the notorious byrd brothers" (1968)   p1

2.0    "byrdmaniax"   (1971)  p2

2.1    "younger than yesterday"  (1967)  p1

2.2    "mr tamborine man"   (1965)  p1

2.3    "turn! turn! turn!"  (1965)  p1

2.4    "farther along"   (1971)  p2

2.4    "dr byrds & mr hyde"   (1969)  p2

2.4     "fifth dimension"   (1968)   p1

2.5     "(untitled)"   (1970)   p2

2.6    "the ballad of easy rider"   (1969)  p2

2.7    "sweetheart of the rodeo"   (1968)  p1

THE BYRDS  "mr tamborine man" cd, 1965

from the box set
contains six extra tracks after the 12 album tracks finish,
five of the six are alternate versions of album tracks, the sixth is not on the album called "she has a way".
personally i do not care for the bonus songs...
played in the car several times now and to be honest i was a bit underwhelmed by it,
it has all the typical jangle guitars and harmonies i expected but some of the songs just fall a bit flat.
not a bad album by any means but just not as good as my expectations were,
and i dont get the reason  to cover Vera Lynn's "we'll meet again", a real WTF album closer let down for me, but that said...

THE BYRDS  "turn! turn! turn!  cd, 1965

from the box set....
their second album, eleven tracks plus a further seven bonus tracks of 'alternate versions' of album tracks...
played in the car over the last three days...
this is more like it, not underwhelming at all, i guess they found their confidence here...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

THE BYRDS  "fifth dimension" cd, 1966

from the box set...
their third (as i listen to the albums chronologically...)
played in the car for the last couple of days on constant rotation...
there is revolution in the air as a coup d'état takes place and principal writer Gene Clark is deposed and ousted by McGuinn and Crosby who only want to record their songs and not feature anymore Dylan penned tunes...
the result?...
a fine collection of songs IMO however critics at the time panned it for trying to be too clever and not cohesive...
in retrospect though, critics have re-evaluated things to say it is an "ambitious, experimental, transitional and highly influential piece of mid 1960s pop"...
it is certainly a step up both musically and lyrically from the two previous efforts, gone are the jangly guitar sounds of previous albums and in come sitars and string sections...
6 bonus tracks on here, several are different versions of album tracks but there are two that dont feature on the album including the non-album single "why"...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

1:   5D (fifth dimension)   ***
2:   wild mountain thyme   **
3:   mister spaceman   ***
4:   i see you   **
5:   whats happening?   ***
6:   i come and stand at every door  **
7:   eight miles high   ***
8:   hey joe   ***
9:   captain soul   **
10:  john riley  (instrumental)   **
11:  2-4-2 foxtrot   **

THE BYRDS  "younger than yesterday" cd, 1967

from the box set...
their fourth...
well that came as a surprise, they push out Gene Clark after the second album as they didnt want any more Dylan tracks and low and behold what do we have on album number.....a cover of "my back pages", WTF!!!
must have been more behind the ousting than the official reasons given....
then again, i dont like Croz as a person, always found him to be a bit devious and slithery on a good day (from what ive read about him) and this now confirms some of that.
anyway, i just find the songs on this album quite weak overall compared to the previous albums and especially so after the excellent third album, except for the brilliant cover of the Dylan track, seriously, these guys should have recorded more Dylan songs as they do them more than enough justice and Dylan could have written specifically for them also, but whatever, it is what it is...
again, more bonus tracks that i dont really care for, i dont need alternate versions or instrumental version of album tracks with some bands, and these guys are one of those bands IMO...
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

1:   so you want to be a rock n roll star   ***
2:   have you seen her face   **

THE BYRDS  "the notorious byrd brothers"  cd, 1968

from the box set...
their fifth studio album and a couple of days to absorb it over Easter....
no Dylan penned numbers but a couple of Goffin/King tunes (fave is one of those)...
several psychedelic tunes, a couple of country-esque tunes and some jazzy almost arty type tunes...
dudes trying to be too clever but dont really have the skills to pull it off successfully without sounding out of their depth...
nothing to love on this album and almost half i dont like this time round...
oh yeah, six bonus tracks, a couple of alternate versions, three instrumentals and Crosby's controversial "triad" which was shelved for some twenty odd years about a ménage à trois.
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

1:   artificial energy   **
2:   goin' back   **
3:   natural harmony   *
4:   draft morning  *
5:   wasnt born to follow   **

THE BYRDS  "sweetheart of the rodeo"  cd,  1968.

from the box set...
their sixth studio, two days of absorption not needed but did anyway...
had never heard anything from this album previously...
Gram Parsons joins the band for this one....
first album in the rock era to be called "country rock/crossover"...
bonus cd of material with this one including 9 previously unreleased tracks, all of which worthy of being released...
at least eight of the album tracks with Gram's vocals also plus alternate versions etc...
Gram's vocal versions are just as good as the official album tracks IMO...
a great album and Parsons helps lift them to another level after the disappointing "notorious byrd brothers" album...

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

1:   you aint goin' nowhere   ***  (written by Dylan)
2:   i am a pilgrim   ***
3:   the christian life   ***
4:   you dont miss your water   **
5:   youre still on my mind   **
6:   pretty boy floyd   ***   (written by Guthrie)
7:   hickory wind   **
8:   one hundred years from now   ***
9:   blue canadian rockies   ***
10: life in prison   ***   (written by Haggard)
