advice needed on noise gate - argos44 - 03-12-2020

Hi!

I have a nice noisegate effect. I mean, I had one. But, I would like to replicate exactly the sound of that.

I mean, given the hardware impedance (I'm not really good at labview), it is impossible that the sound passing through is unaltered, especially if it is realTime.

There must be a filter envelope which mimics that slight clipping.

I think this is a general problem.

Thankx: rexie

this is a sample:

so, I'm honest, this is NOT with that effect, but I used that a lot

1: i have no idea what youre talking about

2: this should probably be in the musicians thread

3: Jerome will probably be the only one here who has an understanding of what youre saying.

Noise gates are particularly effective at cleaning up tracks - i.e removing unwanted noise and such from a track - once the noise level drops or rises above or below a certain set threshold the gate cuts off the main signal. So let's say you hit a snare drum. The sound continues after the initial hit so when the level drops after the hit the gate kicks in and silences the track until the next hit on the snare. That's one way to clean up drum tracks and 'spill'. But noise gates can also be used creatively, especially with electronic music. And they come in all shapes and sizes both hardware and software. If you use a DAW chances are there is already a noise gate installed - you just have to find it. Experiment with different settings and on different instruments.

At the end of the day a noise gate is much like a garden gate - it opens or shuts and allows a signal through or not, based on a certain volume level or amplitude.
