NEW ALBUM: Yola - Walk Through Fire - Ruby - 26-02-2019 YOLA ~ Walk Through Fire ![]() I know nothing of this artist (which is not unusual – there are far too many to keep up with!) other than that she hails from a small town near Bristol, UK. And I don’t really know which category she fits into either – seems to me there’s quite a bit of country going on, but then there’s a lot of soul too, and some pop. I dunno! Whatever it is, she has a great voice – warm, rich, smoky, deep and true - key changes are no problem whatsoever and it's not hard to detect that there is likely latent power that has yet to be fully realised. Nice – no reason to go belting it out unnecessarily, all at once. She’s a natural, I think, and I’d say the lady has a great career ahead of her if she stays on the straight and narrow and doesn’t get overly polished or sidetracked. She sings without engaging in excessive vocal gymnastics – nothing gratuitous which makes a pleasant change! Despite erring more on the side of soul and country than the pop/rock category to which the album appears to have relegated, it’s quite evident that her influences come from a few different stables. Country and soul are not usually my thing (with one or two exceptions) and I liked this album nonetheless. Her songs and her sounds are earthy, comfortable and honest, not to mention all her own. Tastefully produced by Dan Auerbach. The opener – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDhftpjp7WQ And "Ride Out in the Country" …. RE: NEW ALBUM: Yola - Walk Through Fire - CRAZY-HORSE - 26-02-2019 I listened to both linked tracks...two words, "absolutely fabulous!" I remember reading something in a UK music magazine at the end of last year, Paul Weller rated Yola as his pick for best new artist of 2019: I also found this description of the album on the internet: British rising star Yola's debut solo album, 'Walk Through Fire,' produced by The Black Keys' eight-time Grammy Award winner Dan Auerbach, will be on Easy Eye Sound. Yola has blazed her own trail with an unshakable passion for the soul and country music she loves. Walk Through Fire is a contemporary twist on a traditional sonic tapestry of orchestral strings, fiddle, steel and shimmering tremolo guitars, it provides the perfect soundtrack to Yola's arresting vocals, which first came to the attention of Auerbach after a friend sent him a video of Yola performing in Nashville. Written and recorded at Auerbach's Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound, Walk Through Fire is a truly collaborative record. It was written in the studio by Yola and Auerbach with contributions from songwriting legends who between them have written songs for artists from Glen Campbell to Aretha Franklin. Auerbach also assembled his Easy Eye Sound all-star house band composed of legendary session players. Musicians who performed on the record include bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash) as well as drummer Gene Chrisman and pianist Bobby Wood who played on hits by Dusty Springfield and Elvis Presley. Guest performers include up-and-comer Molly Tuttle and country music icon Vince Gill. RE: NEW ALBUM: Yola - Walk Through Fire - CRAZY-HORSE - 28-02-2019 so, the two linked tracks were enough for me to listen to the whole album... this is REAL R+B/soul... whole album has a 1960s, early 70s vibe to it.. its earthy, its rootsy, its authentic-nothing forced whatsoever... this woman, Yola (probably short for Yolanda) has the world at her feet, she could, without a word of a lie (or exaggeration for that matter) take over Amy's mantlepiece as long as she keeps doing what shes doing without record industry interference... I was looking for"sounds like" comparrisons and I managed three of the greatest voices from that era in Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight and Dusty Springfield... this album is ALL class, its on the "to purchase" list! favourite track live from Jools Holland... RE: NEW ALBUM: Yola - Walk Through Fire - SteveO - 03-03-2019 Another revelation of a great female artist ! And the cavalcade of female singers is in full force at MD !
