NEW EP: Santana - In Search of Mona Lisa - Ruby - 26-01-2019 SANTANA ~ In Search of Mona Lisa Carlos Santana has been smitten, unless it’s a really long hangover from the psychedelic days – possibly a bit of both! He queued up at the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa and his imagination immediately took flight. Firstly, he was struck by the fact that she’s more famous than oh, pretty much any ol’ rock/movie star etc., in history of the modern world - that through the ages she’s commanded so much attention, and secondly, to cement the fascination - she communicated with him telepathically. They had apparently been lovers in another time, so he decided to get that all down on EP, as one does!   Mr Santana may be in search of Mona Lisa, but I’m in search of a bit more substance. His guitar playing is great, as always, but an EP is not a hugely satisfying thing IMHO – it’s a teaser, especially in this instance, and three tracks plus two edit versions is slicing it awfully thin. Lots of noodling and swingy bossa type stuff on the first track which is perfectly listenable but also rather unexciting (for me). The second track is a party number which has a similar vibe to “Smooth” - vocals by Cornell “CC” Carter, and the third is probably the most pleasing – reminds me a little of his Devadip days. Others opinions will no doubt differ!
