So here is a little rant from me.
Here is to all the people who don't listen to the charts, like top 50 songs and stuff, and who make fun of popular music because it is ''mainstream'', not because they don't like it or that it doesn't fit their taste.
To all the people, who make fun of certain artists, just because everyone listens to them and because they are, again, ''mainstream''.
To all the people who say they hate something, because everyone else said they loved it.
No, you're not special. You're not different that the rest. So calm your special snowflake little bum, and come down to Earth, because every single thing I just mentioned makes you exactly the same as all the others.
Stop with sentences that begin with ''Am I the only one that.......'', when you very well know, you're NOT the only one.
Stop friggin' thinking that you're something special and you're oh so different, and all the others are all 'basic' and the same.
You listen to idk Melanie Martinez, Twenty One Pilots, Nickelback etc etc, and you automatically have to bash everyone who listens to, for example, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, hell Sam Smith!!
You should like/dislike things because you really do, not because you don't want to like the same things as other people.
You're not better. Neither are you worse than other people. You're not different. You're not special. You will never be special. Bye.

its probably because most (99%) of mainstream/top50 music is one dimensional, has no soul, is mostly extremely autotuned, uses the same computer generated beats as just about every second song on the charts...
now don't say I don't/wont listen to modern music because I randomly pick at least eight "new release" albums rom all genres to listen to each and every week,
at least 60% of what I hear is pure crap, I never want to hear it again, another 30% would be passable or likeable, the remaining 10% would be on my list to purchase
by years end....
and yes, even if I dislike an album by an artist, if their next one comes up as a random pick I will still listen to it because I never know if there will be anything on it
I will like....
the act remains, I dislike most of what is in the top50 on any given week because I do not like the song, period.

Yeah, you see, that's all fine by me. There is a thin line, though, between people like you and the people I described in my post. One kind actually has a specific taste in music, while the other kind however acts only as if they don't like something/someone just so they could seem 'cool' or special, not to repeat myself any further.

Hell, maybe I am one of those people the queen is talking about but there is no way I am ever going to listen to Beyonce, Nicki Minaj or Ariana Grande simply because there music is too formulaic. It's just plain boring and predictable to me. So what if people don't listen to mainstream - it's their choice. Maybe they just like different things as opposed to the disposable pop that dominates the charts these days. And the worst thing about these artists is the bland, unimaginative lyrics - I bought an album by a girl in her teens recently and she has the most inspired lyrics I have heard in years. She actually thinks about the song structure and writes intelligent, emotive lyrics that really make you think instead of the absolute drivel that the mainstream artists are producing. Far as I am concerned, she should be in the charts instead of the 'posers'. Music has to breathe and the mainstream artists have sucked all the life out of it. Occasionally a 'mainstream' artist comes along that has real talent, but they are few and far between. Each to their own I guess??? No, I don't like mainstream, and no, it does not fit my tastes - pure and simple. There are better things to discover and explore.

Well, @Jerome, I've never said that people should actually like Nicki, Beyonce etc. That's a matter of someone's taste in music, and I won't go into that. What I was actually saying is I'm annoyed by people who don't listen to them ONLY because they are popular. Aka the Special Snowflake Syndrom.
I'm annoyed that if I choose to listen to something which, in their eyes, is ''too mainstream'' I will get comments such as ''you don't know about real music lol'' or ''omg ur so basic!''. I don't know, it just really really grinds my gears whenever I hear that. I said someone should like/dislike something because they actually feel like that, and not because they just want to be different than the rest, and I still stand behind that.And @bob_32_116, I stand behind that too. They're not special, they just think they are. I'm not special either, so what?

People can enjoy what they want in music, regardless of whether it is mainstream or not. Yeah there are people who will bash others for their music tastes, but at the end of the day, the music that moves you is a personal thing.
Also mainstream refers not just to the Top 40, but any artist and bands who become popular and well-known so that is fairly broad, that would include The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Katy Perry, Metallica, among others.
