Leonard Cohen "you want it darker"

Spotify listen:

my knowledge of LC is pretty poor...
I only own "songs of leonard cohen" and "songs of love and hate"
plus a compilation...
musically, I like it, its almost atmospheric in places,
the backing vocals are a highlight, almost ethereal throughout,
lyrically, its very good IMO also...
Cohen's vocals are gravelly, almost as if they belong in a
smoky blues club somewhere....
i think they suit the album and the offset of the angelic backing
vocals add another dimension to the album...
it was a pleasant surprise after his last two efforts,
i wont even hazard a guess as to whether MH, who is a big LC fan
will like this one or not, i guess time will tell...

Leonard Cohen "you want it darker" - CRAZY-HORSE - 22-10-2016

you generally don't read anything until you've listened for yourself and made up your own mind, I get that mate, not a problem,
it will be interesting to hear your take on the album though (being the huge fan you are.)

Leonard Cohen "you want it darker" - Music Head - 03-11-2016

enters the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart this week at #10

only Cohen's second top 10 album here
after the last 3 bombed for me I had low expectations for this one
they were easily exceeded
of course he can't sing, he's Cohen
needed more percussion
but the lyrics and use of strings won me over

Leonard Cohen really should have been in the running for that Nobel Prize - perhaps he was – who knows? Frankly, if I were on a panel deciding between Bob and Mr C, I’m not sure I’d be up to the task!

I got around to listening to this the other day, also purposely not reading anything beforehand – just haven’t had the opportunity to comment up to now. He doesn’t really sing much, which is not hugely surprising since his vocal register has sunk to previously unplumbed depths (compared to some years back, at any rate, and it was never very high to begin with!) – quite a lot of spoken word and I don’t mind that, I think it suits the content.

This album is not for the faint of heart! Deeply personal, raw and unflinchingly honest – I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it becomes some kind of a benchmark in terms of it being an examination of, and anthem for, the scourge of aging. It’s like an extended confessional with occasional wry and dry relief which rescues it from being impossibly angst-ridden. Not a comfortable thing to do – face the prospect of one’s mortality. Denial is common ground for most of us, and I think he’s choosing to “rage, rage against the dying of light” in his own inimitable fashion which, it has to be said, is incredibly assured and sophisticated despite (and maybe even because of) the juxtapositions in the content.

I particularly noticed the sounds of various places of worship; the cantor on the first track, for example, and there’s a lot of organ about – “On the Level” has quite a gospel feel IMHO. There are also heavenly creatures scattered about in abundance, as well as their darker counterparts – go figure! And he’s far from ‘out of the picture … leaving the game’ just yet! There’s something defiant and right up-to-date about the way this sounds – nothing anachronistic at all.

As to the title, there are such deep, dark silences spread throughout the album that I found myself almost inhaling the sounds rather than them simply entering my brain via those antennae on the side of the head! Another one for the ever expanding ‘to purchase’ list ….

LOL...
I wrote mine piece in layman's terms and gave the draft to Ruby so she could copy it.

Damn you girl, you've made us both look stupid again!
