Understanding lyrics (Motorhomes - Into the Night) - Urch - 16-03-2016

I often feel like I'm missing something about song lyrics. I thought I'd ask how other people see lyrics and hopefully I'll gain something from it, starting with this song that I just listened to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4vUQz-1i5o

Quote:Into the night we're alright
Into the pale moonlight
Nothing could go wrong
When you're alone carry on
Pull out the nails from your bones
Keep on keeping on

You've got nothing to fear
Promise you will be there
Nothing will go wrong

Don't chase the beat of your heart
Don't let yourself fall apart
Nothing could go wrong

You've got nothing to fear
Promise you will be there
Nothing will go wrong
This pain put there by your loved ones
Goes deep into your bones
That carry your body
This pain put there by your loved ones
Goes deep into your bones
That carry your body

Into the night it's alright
Into the pale morninglight
Nothing has gone wrong
And nothing will go wrong

Some questions:
He starts by saying "we're alright" and just a couple of lines later he says "
When you're alone carry on." Why this sudden change from "we" to "you?" Does this mean the singer knows he will soon be gone, leaving the person he's addressing alone?

What would nails in one's bones symbolize?

"Promise you will be there..." Be where?

The only time other people than the two in the first and second person perspective are mentioned, is with "This pain put there by your loved ones." It seems like such a significant line that I feel like the rest of the lyrics are about these loved ones somehow, and we're supposed to read exactly how between lines. Do you agree, and why/why not?

Reading these lyrics, how clearly do you feel you understand their theme?

Do you think lyrics should have a well defined theme, or are you happy with them conveying vague moods and feelings?

General musing is also welcome.

The fact that the author is repeating him/herself says to me that they don't really have a cohesive idea. Bad lyrics - pure and simple.

song lyrics only have meaning to the person who wrote them

I disagree. A well written song/lyric conveys a story that the listener can relate to. We identify with certain songs because we can relate to what the songwriter is saying. Paul Simon in particular, is someone who has a real gift when it comes to putting down words that people can identify with.

Indeed. I think a listener can see meaning in songs that the artist intended. There are songs and lyrical content I relate to so much, I could've written them myself.

So, basically... the lyrics come off as gibberish to all of you?

To me it's just vague wishy-washy nonsense. I cannot speak for the others on the forum but I don't think it's a cohesive idea and to be quite honest I don't like the music either. Just my opinion - others will see it differently.
