Most instruments are tuned to a standard - and that standard that we use in the world today dictates that the note A vibrates at 440Hz in standard tuning. There is a school of thought that says that the note should actually be 432Hz because they think it's more natural than 440Hz. Quite frankly I don't see what the fuss is about because many instruments can be relatively tuned - i.e. you can tune the 5 other strings of the guitar to the tone you determine on the first string you tune. In other words you randomly pick the frequency of the first string and then tune all the others relative to that. The problem comes in when you use more than one instrument. Then it gets messy.
