Terrif mult-genre singer and music-maker. Dead since '09 but his legacy lives on--he was a bedrock in New Orleans since the '60's (his first was in '53 [sideman]; didn't hit his stride 'til '58-'60--the Imperial then Black Top sides). Few CDs and he didn't concertize much--the consummate sideman/music director on the QT. Oh yeah, his nickname? He was reputed to know 2500 songs inside and out...and never gave out with a setlist, not even to the band--flexibility and deep song knowledge's the key here if you side with him.

the city name New Orleans,when mentioned, almost always gets my attention....
it is such an eclectic place for music....
my favourite artist from the early rock and roll days(and pre-rock) comes from there in the legendary Fats Domino(yes i like him more than Elvis) but Elvis is still The King IMO!
and of course the super eclectic Dr.John also amongst others....
that said, i love the music from that city but i dislike the city with a passion....
it was good to actually go there and see just how high the waters of Katrina got and some of the destruction it caused(which was still evident in 2011 BTW), and to see the architecture in the French Quarter, but the city itself.......enough said!
lets just say, one day and one night was more than enough time there....
couldnt wait to head along the PanHandle to Florida....then the stupid State Troopers pulled me over, but thats another story for another time...LMAO!

The reason New Orleans is such an economically poor town is partially because it's so renowned for music. Like many other tourist towns, its main economic drivers are servicing visitors and service jobs always pay less than manufacturing or other industry. That especially includes restaurants and music. Another thing: because it is so historically important and so focused on the past, the city can't be moved and rebuilt where it should be, to escape the worst of the ravages of hurricanes. It should be on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain--it would still be affected by storms but not nearly as much. I expect controversy for these statements but the truth is the truth. Another poor tourist city is Bruges, Belgium q.v.

ive travelled to a few countries in Europe when i was young(16ish) but i never went to Belgium.
